I went to my cousin's place tonight to watch a boxing match and we ended up talking firearms, out comes this rifle which at first glance I thought was a ww1 era K98 (mauser action, staight bolt handle) but after handling one of the rounds for it I found out the thing is chambered in 6.5 x 55. The gun appears to be the typical bubba with shortened wood, it had 3 lines of what looks like German writing on top of the barrel and the date 1917 (Gewarm something something something, didn't pay much attention), there is a brass stock disk on the right side of the stock and the rear sight elevation adjustment is some sort of wheel thingy, never seen that before ... . Any idea what this thing might be and approximate value ? He says he paid 100 bucks for the rifle ...

That'd be a sporterised Swedish Mauser M1896, made by Waffenfabrik Mauser Oberndorf. The brass stock disk was used for monitoring bore condition, and it has one of the click-adjustable target sights. Not worth too much as a sporter, probably not much over that $100.
A bubba still being a bubba though.
Under normal circumstances, you wouldn't pay more than $250-$300 for a Swede M96 that's still in good condition with full wood.
For a bubba, immediately detract half or more if more was done to it than just the wood that's been taken off, and then go down based on condition.

I have been collecting Swede parts since I got into them two years ago, and part for part they are pricey critters. I know folks that have bought sportered Swedes just to be able to get at the sight inserts if they have them.
