Winchester Model 70 control feed barrel change

Give a little more information...

Do you have an unaltered factory action?

Do you have an unaltered correct factory barrel to install?

That could be as little as $25 labour...

here is what I would like
buy a winchester weather extreme in 338
take the barrel of and have a 458 magnum barrel installed
barrel must have the cone breach that all present model 70 have
no sight
and then would have someone modify the stock

I am assuming the 458 barrel is a blank... and you are supplying it...

Basically you need a gunsmith with a .458 Winchester reamer. Any actual gunsmith is capable of installing barrel blanks on any Model 70.

There are many in Canada qualified to install a barrel on a pre 64 style model 70... it isn't rocket science... but they also require a .458 Winchester chambering reamer. That will cut out a lot of 'smiths'.

Typically if the blank was pre-contoured close to what is required I would expect a charge of about $300 + to thread, fit, chamber, cut the extractor clearance, and crown. That is no sight work, no stock work and no bluing. A pre-contoured barrel blank varies in price from $500 to $700.

So you may get the job done for less than $1000 if you find someone who wants to pay for your unwanted .338 barrel, but the job could also cost more than $1000 if you want iron sights and there is stock work to be done.

First thing is to find a 'smith' with a .458 Winchester reamer...
