need something light ...was thinking a whistlepig or there abouts,,,,may consider others for sure,,,,,buliding a light rig for my youngest boy

go short. here are a couple re profiled wood stocks, one is a 12.5 dlask .750" bbl. the other an 18" green mountain. the 12.5 along with the trimmed stock is perfect for smaller people. The setup pictured weighs 5lb 2oz, but is balanced right behind the mag, so forend weight is only about 2lbs. The blast seems about the same as my 18" with high velocity if I run standard velocity ammo, wich my 12.5 runs reliably. It seems my 12.5 runs a wide variety of ammo perfectly compared to my 18" must be something to do with pressure curves ect? And your going to want to have ears and eyes anyway on young or new people.

Ooooo good call. Thank you. Will research some shorter barrels

If you're planning on cutting the LOP on the stock, the Dlask 12.5" barrel would be the shortest you can go. The next step down is a 8" Dlask barrel and would require an adult LOP stock to stay above 26" for NR. All other barrels I know of on the market are 16.5, 18.5, and 20"+. It's also illegal to cut the barrel shorter than 18.5", but it's legal if the barrel comes from the factory that way.

Even at 12.5" and fluted, the Dlask barrels are quite heavy, I won't recommend that for children. If your budget allows for it, I would recommend the carbon wrapped or aluminium wrapped 16.5" barrels. The Bergara BXR is also worth looking into, it's a 10/22 clone with a factory carbon wrapped barrel.

Kidd and Tacsol will provide the lightest barrels. I prefer 16.5" for balance and noise reduction.

Dlask 12.5" sporter contour will be slightly lighter than factory 18.5", but loud.

8" Dlask HB barrels require ear protection all the time, feel some what clunky, due to light butt stock and all barrel weight to the front.

16.5, 18, 20 regular HB are great for bench, heavy in the field.

i have a tacsol and a 8" dlask and the tacsol wins hands down.
on a hogue stock i feel like it almost needs to be tied to a anchor or it will float away!
