hand care when shooting pellets

getting back into air rifles
with the aversion to lead poisoning in handloading cast bullets has me thinking
never seen any precautions on shooting pellets from these rifles

if you shot 500 at a 4 hour sitting should you wash your hands or eat anything like lunch or snacks?

is there anything like some of the hand šŸ– applications you put on for reloading?

and if so would that affect the pellets or the barrel

just never saw anything on this issue before

asking for me and not a friend
 
I did a velocity test a week or two back and wore a nitrile glove on the hand that I was using to single load the pellets. Since then I have washed and lubed my pellets with Pledge and will simply wash my hands when I'm done shooting. When we were kids I remember throwing a few in the mouth and keeping them by your cheek for easy access. Times have certainly changed.
 
Hah, we also used to keep the pellets in our mouth for fast reloads. Also remember your fingers being shiny dark from handling pellets. No wonder I wound up driving a forklift.
 
Wash your hands and keep your unwashed hands out of your body, and you will have nothing to worry about.

Lead is not a risk, but the oxides are. The white powder on corroded lead was the same stuff that they used to make white paint that everyone now tests for before they let their kids lick the windows in their houses.

If you cannot keep your hands out of your mouth and other body parts, handling lead is probably best avoided.

As far as melting the stuff, you run more risks breathing in the smoke from snoose spit, shop floor sweepings and dog pee, on wheel weights, than from the lead itself, as long as you do not bring the lead up to a temperature that causes it to boil and vaporize.
 
Yup! kept them in my mouth as well , best place for them when sniping squirrels and birds while scaling a tree or sneeking up stump jumping from one hide to the next . Don't remember Swallowing them but chance are that I most possible did . Was more worried about Ricochets and having to dig them out with out mother finding out about it !( would have ment Seizure And Forfeit of ammo !) Remember shooting branches to get them choice apples and in the spring thaw shooting Icicles off the roof but mother put a stop to that and father wasn't impressed with the lead stains LOL !

Did the same as a kid. One of the neighbors taught me that trick. Dumb sh!t.

These days I keep wet ones in small peanut butter jars because they are tough. I keep one in every range bag I have. The usual packaging for handi wipes never lasts and they dry out, but in the jar they don't. I even add a little water to ensure they are good and wet.

Good idea on keeping some wet wipes in a container in the range bag. I've had them dry out before.
