I have a Tac Ord Versamax and generally run Black Goose slugs through it which I find shoot a little high but it is possible to compensate with the sights.

I just picked up a crate of Federal slugs and ran some through it today, I found that they were crazy high (5-6" at least @ 50 yards) but I cant see any way to adjust the sights.

I picked up a TOMM mount from Tac Ord to mount a RMR red dot which would fix it up but I run Tac Ops class in 3 Gun so that won't fly there.

Ideas?

Been reading that using the clamp for the tube extension may be to blame as it changes the POI.

Has anyone experienced this? Maybe I will lose the clamp and see what happens.

I tried removing the clamp and it made minimal difference.

I find the gun shoots around 6-7" high at 50 yards (tried two different brands of slugs - one is ~6" high and centred and the other is ~5" high and 1-2" right from point of aim - both are repeatable / consistent).

Try adding a taller front bead . That may help you out a little.

I think this would be easiest - either by adding a new taller bead or by using a series of spacers until I get it sighted in for correct elevation.

Any ideas on what sights would work?

I have been chatting with Casey from Tac Ord (super helpful guy) and he suggested lowering the V sight on the rear (would mean machining) but I completely removed it and used the silver bead on the rib & the front sight and it was still high at 50.

The TOMM mount and a dot will be the easiest way to get your POI the way you want it. You can only go so high with a front bead before things start going wonky.

I have the 28" but had the same issue, shot too high at 50 yards to be able to use the sights at all to shoot slugs. I now use a burris speedbead mount with a vortex venom mounted. This mount let's me leave the dot off when I'm wing shooting or turn it on for slugs

Are you shooting it with a certain choke? I know when I pattern shot and slugs, my poa/poi for slugs will change with different chokes.

Yes, light modified is what I have been using, I have a full set of chokes but it seems to work well for everything so thats what I generally use.

I tried two different slug brands and they were different but consistent - the challenger stayed centred but was extremely high (to the point that the first shot wasn't even on paper) and the Black Goose was quite high and a little to the right with every shot.

I guess I could try a full choke but I don't see it correcting the height issue to the degree thats required (~6")

Yes, I agree, the TOMM and red dot will fix it up, adding height to the front will make the 50 yard slug shots better but possibly at the cost of some close quarters accuracy due to the additional height over bore.

Biggest disadvantage for me is using the TOMM would mean I couldn't be in Tac Ops in 3 gun, I'd have to be in Open.

Interesting, so its not just me then.......

That’s too bad as it would be an easy fix, I’m not familiar with the versa max front sight. Is it a bead on pedestal or rib or is it like the front rem rifle sight that’s easy to swap out? Definitely sounds like you need a taller front sight, I like a rds on a shotgun and have used one for awhile but I always revert back to irons. Remingtons rifle sights are my favourite style on a shotgun.

If/when I get home from work I will dig into this a little more.

I'll probably have lots of time........

Does the vmax come with shims to adjust the cast and pitch of the stock?
That would be step 1.

If not, then you could look at a front sight like the HiViz Flashpoint or Tricomp
They have fibre inserts with different heights.

Actually, this is step one...
Have you patterned the gun to see if its shooting high with birdshot?
Because if its shooting where it needs to with bird (i.e. 95%+ of the shots at most competitions) then changing things up for a few slug shots can mess up the rest of the match as you'll be shooting low.
Just remember to aim a coupe inches low for the slugs and carry on.

Screw in a full choke, put up a large piece of paper 20 yards, draw a dot and aim at it as if you were shooting a slug trying to hit it.

How does yours shoot slugs? Are they crazy high (~6-8") like mine at 50 yards?

The S&B slugs I was previously using are actually pretty accurate with good windage, elevation and groups out to 50 yards off the bench. But accuracy and groups really starts to fall away at distances beyond 50 yards. Can’t recall my 75 and 100 yard POI as targets are at the cottage and i’m not. But after a disappointing performance, especially in my slug and buckshot stages, at the IPSC SG Nationals last year, decided to try and improve on a few things this year, so i’ve started to experiment with other slugs and the ones that have the tightest pattern are grouping high. Can’t recall how high until I check targets, but do need to find a fix.

PaulS above fix may be it, but do like how my birdshot patterns when I do my part, so maybe not.
