I'm looking for a scope to start shooting around 100 yards, and work up to about 500 as that is the line of site I have out back. A scope recommendation, or even what numbers and magnification I should be looking for is greatly appreciated, thanks.

#1 dont skimp on optics, bases/rings
#2 what is your intended purpose for the scope (hunting, target shooting, precision shooting, etc?). It will determine what people will suggest.

I hate that reticle, but that's a personal choice. For your stated purpose it'll get you where you need to go, but the glass won't be anything to write home about and the tracking may not be perfect. Please note those are assumptions on my part and I have no personal familiarity with that scope. You can't beat the Vortex warranty.

Edit: It's also worth mentioning that that scope is a SFP (second focal plane) reticle. What that means is the values indicated by the reticle will only be true at a specific magnification, usually the highest one, in this case 18x. If the values being true at any magnification is something you feel like you need, you want a FFP (first focal plane) reticle.

Again it comes down to personal preference.
Are you comfortable shooting with the style of reticle you indicated with the Vortex link? Might be a bit of overkill for your type of requirement
A Duplex or some form of BDC might be more suited if your not going for the "bullet through the same hole" look. A side focus parallax is usually recommended as well.
I prefer Leupold & Nikon myself
Something like https://shooterschoice.ca/product/leupold-vx-3i-4-5-14x40/
I'm sure other CGN'rs will share their thoughts as well.
Biggest thing is to learn to shoot your rifle and shoot it well. You could have a $7000 March scope on it but unless you can shoot it would be a waste of money.

I was going that route, based on recommendations from a friend when Eurooptic put it on sale for $299USD.

Guys at Vortex recommended Diamondback Tactical, which costs a little more yet is FFP and has more quality and fewer features than the Strike Eagle.

Bought this to learn more for the time being...

Something like this? I'm trying to take advantage of a sale, and am rushing a bit, but really appreciate the feedback

Take your time... I'm pretty sure Vortex is one of the few products excluded from the 16% off sale as indicated in the advertisement's small print.

I'd be more inclined toward the Viper HS 2.5-10x44 they have. It's slightly more expensive but having destroyed a Diamondback shooting 22lr silhouette, I've been dubious of the quality of Vortex' cheaper lines. Suit yourself: they do have a good warranty... personally, it's just a trouble I don't like having to bother with.

EDIT: just noticed your last post... some of what I just said above is redundant now.

Have you looked on the EE? Usually good deals to be had. If you are settled on vortex then the warranty has you covered no matter what. Vortex isnt included in the sale you are linking....

Think I've talked myself into a little bit more money, unless anyone has anything bad to say about this one. This is top of budget for scope on the new rifle I'm considering

Consider spending a few dollars reading Reg's book, to learn what features you want in a scope. Those few book dollars may save you from buying a scope that's wrong for you. For example, do you prefer working in MOA or MRAD?

Is that Viper SFP? It doesn't say on the page that it's FFP.
