Good morning all.
Getting ready for the upcoming zombie Apocalypse, about time to get the Hakim running.
Never shot it...but I acquired a lot of that 8 x 64 MG ammo. So, I'm looking for a safe loading for a 220 grain FMJ.
Just a workable load, nothing over the top.
Take care.

Suggest you start very light. They're not making these rifles anymore, so parts will be impossible to find.

The 8x60 is not comparable to the 7.9x57 in just about every way - case, bullet weight, powder type and burn rate. So, please do your research here for the long conversations about salvaging components.

There is old-new Russian labelled 8mm Mauser on the market. For the work you'll put into downloading the Swedish 8mm, you will be further ahead downloading the paper box ammunition. FWIW, I think even that stuff has a needlessly heavy bullet for your semi-auto.

Looking for someone with experience here, not a Hazard ID form. Not to seem disrespectful, although it'll likely get taken that way anyhow.
A little research puts a few opinions forth that the bullet for the service load for 8mm was 196 grains. 220 grains is pretty close to that... I have not shot a Hakim yet. I have shot ( and reloaded for ) Mausers plenty in 8 x 57 mind you...different animal though of course.
As to the 8 x 64 ammo...well a loaded cartridge is cheaper than 8mm bullets alone are...so, yeah...I want to utilise them if at all possible. It's stupid easy to dismantle them too. Given the choice of heavier vs lighter than service load; cautiously I prefer heavier. These guns were meant for service loads, not powder puff CASS loads. I don't want to abuse it, but still run a decent load.
Burning though Premium bullets shooting plates does seem a bit costly.
Seems like I'll need to do some research and dig out the Chronograph, find a loading with a decent velocity and carefully see what works. Unless someone has anything real world in this ballpark to add.
Self Isolation is much better when firearms research is possible. :ar15:

I think he talking about using the bullets from the Swedish ammo the powder in them is supposed to be close to IMR 4064 though. I was looking into buying some when it was available recently to pull down for the powder and I could also use the brass with a sleeve to make .577-450 by converting it to .209 primers. I don't own anything in 8mm so bullets would be useless to me

hodgdon has 220gr data

Well, the brass is useless to me. Perhaps once a cautious load has been established, then maybe we shall see about utilizing the powder as well. But one step at a time, right?

from what I read backing off say 15% from a max load(IMR 4064) is recommended with the powder. im going to try using .30-06 first for the .577-450 and maybe .308/7.62x51 for .577 snider just need to find a machinist to make me some of the sleeves

Thanks for the input. Perhaps I can further solve that conundrum of powder similarity... in a K98 mind you.
I'll just load of identical amounts of 4064 and Swede MG ammo and see how they compare on chrono, for accuracy etc

If these are anything like the AG42B then hard/military grade primers are in order to prevent slam fires.

With the 218 grain Swede Bullet, 40 grains of the Swede Flake Powder does 1930fps, 40 grains IMR 4064 does 2210fps.

42.5 grains of the Swede Powder does 2170 in a K98 and 2198 in a Portuguese M904/39.

The Swede Flake Powdet is slower than IMR 4064, you are on solid ground using 4064 data.

A chronograph is your friend and the Hakim has an adjustable gas system.

thats a smart plan to test the loads in a Mauser before moving to the hakim

Mr D. Mauser ( Danzig) says that 41.5 grains of Swede powder under a 220 grain FMJ is a bit of a Pussycat. Pet Loads says 2150 fps under a 225 grain jacketed bullet with 45 grains of 4064...a bit of a pussycat IMO. My chrono doesn't run in the cold...my rules. So I've no fps data, and the Hakim will throw them into the snow...so that waits too, lol
