Hi,
Bought a crate of this stuff form a gun store which told me it was 7.62x39. It is not. If anyone could help me ID it and let me know what kind of firearm it fits that would make my day!

The head-stamp say 69 on one end and 71 on the other

Thanks in advance!

Yeah. Not much of a mystery there. 7.62x54R. Better not let s***** h***** see this. :p

To be fair, those of us who have bought both 7.62x54R and 7.62x39 in those cans would recognize the "440" as the count of rounds in the can. Most or all of the stuff I've bought in cans in 54R have 440 rounds per can.

Why don't you take it back. They told you it was one thing, and it wasn't. Store policy on no ammo returns shouldn't apply if the staff can't properly ID what they sold you.

I'm with thef other guys here .. can markings are 7.62x39. They come in 440 per can. on your next run out you want 750 or 660 rounds per can. Mosin for your bolt, or SVT for your semi. Either klick like a canon on a stick

You wilted Flower...it's stiff, but not too bad, and I shoot a 6mm because my shoulder is unhappy with anything heavier than about 100-110gr projectile. As for the rest, kind of confused, 7.62X54R is used buy the Mosin Nagant, and the SVT, and I could be mistaken but the Cartridge in question is on the left, 7.62X54R by the look of it.

Svt recoil is really light. The noise from the muzzle brake on the other hand will definitely help your social distancing...
Good find since x54 surplus is getting scarce/expensive. Bet you someone would gladly trade you for a can of x39

Chinese x54R light ball

Using markings copied from a thread on gunboards, it is Type 53 (7.62x54R) steel core light ball (LPS in Russian designation) in steel cases, made by Factory 71 in 1969, and by the quantity it is in 20rd bundles rather than on stripper clips. FWIW, I've seen some quite favorable reviews of late-'60s and early-'70s ammo from this establishment, and my experience with 1973 vintage had been good in both Mosins and SVT. Factory 61 is the other producer commonly seen in surplus ammo, and they make the nominally-noncorrosive export machinegun ammo that's coming into Canada. There have been a few other producers that turn up occasionally, and individual Chinese factory can make a difference in the ammo.
