HP9-1 won't fit 4th slug?

I had my Norinco HP9-1 out yesterday for the first time and ran five Federal 2 3/4" 1 oz. magnum slugs through it. I found that I couldn't load any more than three shells into the magazine tube. The fourth would just barely NOT fit. I didn't have any other shells to compare length with. Now I just tried it with Winchester 2 3/4" 00 buck and it fit four just fine, though the fourth left extremely little wiggle room. Are the Federal magnum slugs just that much extra longer or is there something wrong with my gun? Would I benefit from a +1 extension?

not all 2 3/4 slugs are created equal. I find some federal ammo fits better in my fabarm than other brands. This is especially true in slugs, and I believe it has to do with the type of crimp on the shell. Some I can fit 5, others not. Try a variety of ammo and you'll find what works best.

Thanks for the speedy response. The primary role for my gun is bear defense so I'm interested in capacity first. If I can fit four 2 3/4" slugs that would be preferable to three 3", however if I can only fit three 2 3/4" then I'm better off with the 3" anyhow. Ultimately I plan to use Brenneke slugs but not a single dealer in Manitoba carries them. Wholesale says they can order them but I'd rather wait until they arrive in stock. Not interested in leaving my name and number with anyone for anything firearms related, unless the law says you have to. Security of self and all that jazz.

I think I'll be buying that +1 extension regardless. It'll fit flush with the muzzle and give me that extra capacity I'm looking for.

You only need one shot. :p ;)

If you NEED to get a shot off, you'll only realistically get 2 shots off.

Find a good slug and do a bit of practicing, that is paramount to capacity.

Good advice. This concept is new to me, I've never hunted and the only bear I ever encountered was on the side of the road from a distance. He plodded off into the trees after I got out and took his picture. :p

I was under the (mistaken?) impression that in case you miss, you'll want to have as many follow up shots as possible. Since the difference between a 2 3/4" and a 3" magnum slug is negligible I figured capacity made more sense, provided you're using an acceptable round to begin with like the Brennekes. Am I wrong in this line of thinking?

Hunting bear, and bear "defense" are two different things. I'd like a rifle for hunting bear. If a bear is "in my face" I'd go 12G slugs. The in your face bear defence scenario does not cater to taking your time and getting extra shots off.

"...a decent pattern..." Slugs don't get patterned. They get sighted in with just like a rifle.
"...If a bear is "in my face"..." If Yogi is in your face, it's too late. If Yogi is within 25 yards or so, it's too late. Yogi can move incredibly fast. Far faster than you ever could. About 35 MPH. Fortunately, Yogi isn't interested in you. You smell of nothing but trouble to him.

Ok, what ever a bunch of slug holes in a tight circle/area is called then:rolleyes:

and my FABARM has a fixed sight no it in fact cannot be 'sighted in'.

Anyhoo...what Nine said sounds about right to me.

Oh and please don't think Yogi is disinterested...I see bears daily in and out of my town so I beg to differ.

talking of the speed a bear can get yo you, how do you plan to sling you bear defence gun?
if your goig nwith a standard 2 point, do you think that will be fast enought to get from over your shoulder to on your shoulder and aimed befor he gets you?
what ideas have you for getting that gun to your shoulder as fast as you can.

I could do it with a 2 point....course I carry it the right way ;)

Muzzle down, slung over left shoulder, left hand on forestock. Instant deployment to the shoulder, and in the case of a rifle, with the sling set to the correct length it is very easy and exrtremely quick to go into a sling assisted offhand position....I'd bet just as fast as a single point setup...faster depending on level of practice.

but I do see where you are going with this, and yes, the S&J single point sling mounts that you sell are good..:)

Vendor or not a long gun without a proper sling is like a pistol with no holster and the point is very valid.

Most accounts of getting eaten/killed (assuming a firearm was present) speak of the gun found loaded etc...So having it 'handy' may just very well be the deciding factor of who eats whom.

I had a single point from FarmBoy but I found it left the gun to swing/bounce around (I am speaking of hiking and fishing applications) Lord knows I was prolly doing something wrong but I went back to a 2 point.

what i was thinking of course is the single point sling mount, but if that does not work for you, the the best 2 poitn sling i have ever used is the Blue force gear Vickers sling.

BBB I sent you a PM about some other 870 accessories. Did you get it? Depending on whether I fit the Tamer grip I'd be interested in the mount you sell also.
