Nightstick

I'm also firmly with AFGA on spears, nothing ethical about that at all, glad they are banned in AB.

What is unethical about using a spear? They kill by the same mechanism as a bow & arrow, except that you have to get a lot closer. Spearing an animal at 15 feet is unethical, but killing the same animal at 60 yards with a bow is ok?

They don't use the same mechanism at all. One uses massive mechanical advantage, one relies purely on a person's physical strength and skill. Who decides who's strong enough and who's not?

Out to 10m the Canuck Defender can easily hit a 12" target every time, which would seem to be its niche. It isn't anyone's favourite duck hunting gun, but it doesn't get in the way when you are doing the housework and surfing the net as you self-isolate. It isn't for everybody.

Both kill by hemorrhaging and a spear has a much larger cutting surface. Drawing back a bow requires strength and skill too. Watch some of Tim Well's videos and tell me how it's unethical.

We both know that your either strong enough to draw your bow to its apex or not. Put Tim Well up with his spear against my 100lb niece who thinks it would be cool to go kill a black bear with a spear and think their blows would have the same force? Not remotely close. If they are both using a bow they would be the same.

That you can't hit anything with a bird's head grip shotgun!!!
Punching a paper target on a static range, with all the time in the world to set up your aim, no drenaline pumping through your system, is cute and all but you are only trying to convince yourself if you think that having a stock doesn't make you significantly more accurate, faster, proficient, allow you to reaload much faster and easier (shotguns are always empty), makes handling the shotgun MUCH easier and efficient and exponentially multiplies your survivability rate in the event that you have to use it. No stock means all the weight is in front of your shooting hand, no stock means you don't have any support points behind your shooting hand to efficiently manipulate your 100% imbalanced shotgun during use.

From any practical point of view, stockless shotguns make no sense whatsoever.

Deliberately running a stockless shotgun is setting yourself for failure. Full stop.

So because your niece can’t do it, it is unethical for Tim to do it?? Ok comrade. ;)

Resorting to name calling now eh, best you got? Remember, we're not talking about a need to eat or die situation, this is about harvesting game ethically with one set of rules to oversee everyone.

Dietz, how many hours around do you have behind a bird's head grip shotgun?
You seem to be a man who speaks from experience ....

i have used birds head grips on pump shotguns and have a moderate amount of experience shooting them. i find them to have a fun factor but i always gravitate back to a full stock.accuracy is much improved with a full stock , speed on a second shot is better, and my ability to shoot slugs , buckshot and other hard kicking ammo without having the gun get away from me factor into it. brobee has shown the rest of us that it is possible to use these guns within limits.

I shouldn't have clouded the conversation by using 2 calibres, but as no derringer's I know of are in 44 mag, I went with 45. I personally would take issue with anyone choosing to use a derringer to hunt with, no question. Using a 1" pistol as backup to your primary weapon against dangerous game, different issue altogether. I agree with you on the spear ban in AB.

If I recall correctly, wasn't it the GWH(Great White Hunter) Josh Bomar who was responsible for the spear ban in AB?

I remember seeing that POS black bear hunt video which he proudly posted online. He managed to hit the bear with

his spear, but left it to suffer overnight before looking for it the next day. The epitome of an unethical hunter.

He deserves a swift kick to the pills for that fiasco, and a huge fine and a lifetime hunting ban.

Does no one think these are perfect candidates for the .410?

This set up just seems perfect for .410 to me as it becomes much easier to handle and control during firing.
Modern .410 loads also keep the capabilities of the system up to snuff.
