Hey CGN. I'm new to long range shooting, (never ringed steel past 200ish new) and I'm just curious as to what you would suggest for a precision rifle that will be good to practice with, but is also capable of reaching 1000 yards once I have the skills to do so. Right now I'm thinking of a Remington 700 in .308. Any suggestions are welcome! :)

Welcome, I've been standing on the edge of this rabbit hole as well and look forward to following this thread. So far I'm leaning towards the Ruger precision rifle in .308 but no definite decision or timeline yet.

I own and love many 700's and would not tell you not to buy one, especially if you like to tinker and plan to upgrade. I am also a 308 evangelist! However out of the box no messing around I think dollar for dollar a ruger precision is probably the best bet. If you get one used I would say go 308 as they seem less expensive than a 6.5 creedmoor ( 308 is great just not currently en vogue) if you plan to buy new seriously consider the 6.5 creedmoor.

I’ve been messing around with a rem 783 6.5 CM ,16 inch HB
Cheap scope,ring etc.
I’ve scooped out the barrel channel on the stock.
For $650 all in, it’s looking good so far.
It’s not for competition, just for fun.
All 5 rnd groups,100 yards, measured from outside to outside

Another vote for the 783 in 6.5 Creedmoor.

Off the shelf... bed and load up some ammo. Should be an easy sub MOA and no issue to shoot as far as the 6.5 is capable of... which is a very long ways. There is a plastic stock version but I much prefer the lam stock if not changing anything.

Or get a donor action/rifle... swap in a match barrel, stock or chassis

And have custom rifle performance on the cheap.

If you prefer lam stocks....

As much as I am a fan of the Savage platform, today, you better be careful which action you end up with...

Tikka's are the best value proposition, IMO. Great build quality, they shoot excellent, and the aftermarket support for them is exploding. Stocks are mediocre, I would personally change out the OEM stock with a KRG Bravo if the budget allows.

It's a bit more $ then some other rifles, but the result is a better quality rifle to build off of. Spending more and you start encountering the law of diminishing returns.

Yep, what he said. I have remington 700s and savage model 10s, and I wouldn't buy another of either. A tikka varmint in 6.5 creed inside a KRG bravo would be a nice package.

Best cost to performance. A Remington 5R Milspec. Specifically the older stainless with green/black stock in 308. Look on the EE for deals. If there is a sale or a good deal in the EE then a gen2 in 6.5 could also be a good value. But only if on sale.

I am a 40x Remington person, but the older 5 milspec Remington is very good I have one that I got on here
Most people really look after them.

For everything out of the box to be ready to go the RPR and Savage are hard to beat at the price point.

If you build off of an action like a 700 or Tilla be prepared to never recover your money or anywhere close when you spin it off to upgrade. Nobody wants exactly what you want, and the upgrade rabbit hole gets expensive and distracting.

It seems $ to performance it’s hard to beat Savage but I personally went with a Weatherby Vanguard Modular Chassis. Sub MOA guaranty from Weatherby and because I didn’t want to fiddle with upgrades for now. If I get to that level I’ll sell it and upgrade then to something more upgradable.

Hard to beat this deal.

leaves some $$ left for nice glass or Match grade ammo!

Any Husqvarna in 1900 action. Pick a caliber you are comfortable with. Amazing long range rifles. Barrels thin - so be prepared to 'take your time' while enjoying immensely!
