338-06 A Square LOVE

When things are perfect and a moose is standing dead-calm and broadside at under 100 yards even a .243 Winchester will cleanly kill the critter.

Make that a rutted-up bull coming into a call who will only give you a hard quartering-to shot then the big heavy bullets prove their worth. The later scenario is also why many of us use premium bullets regardless of cartridge used.

I love my 338-06 Build.
Started the build with a Gew98 receiver, mated it to a PacNor barrel, added a Parker Hale Bolt, it’s properly headspaced, Bold side safety trigger and added an aftermarket drop plate Mag. Put it all in a unfinished laminated stock. Everything test fires as it should just have to finish glass bedding and then load development.
It’s taken a few years to get it to this point but it’s a labour of love.
It’s looking like I’ll have nothing but time for the next couple months with this social distancing lol

Tell us about the rest of the build ? action-barrel-trigger - finish ETC thks RJ
It's a Rem 700 DM that was trued by Guntech.

Action, bottom metal and magazine have all been Cerakoted in Gun Metal grey color.
Stainless Shilen barrel and TriggerTech trigger.

Wildcat stock is pretty much done except for a bit of messing around with the DM bottom
metal to get ammo to feed correctly. Stock has a grind-to-fit recoil pad on it and I'll be giving
it a Duracoat paint finish when complete.

Already have a set of low Talley rings for it but havent decided on which scope yet.
I have a spare VX-II 3x9 LR dupley and a VX-II 4-12 AO LR duplex laying around in the basement.

I build mine off of a Mauser 98 and a JC custom barrel. I dropped it into an old Fajin stock I had kicking around and put a Dakota safety on it just like a Winchester model 70. The damn thing loves shooting Barnes 210gr TTSX with H414 powder.

I have a couple, they're keepers

Nice dark timber bull Todd!
Looks like the rifle's second home! (laying against another harvested animal)
Also nice to see another 338-06 in a lefty (for those of us in our "right" minds! LOL)

Im still split between the 338/06 and the 35 whelen. I started a 338fed project but things are on pause right now for the time being. That said the 338/06 is a great cartridge

The Baby 338 Fed is a GREAT cartridge as is the 338-06 - I have both ! I had a 338 Win Mag and a 338 RUM but there both gone now ! RJ

... because it's not enough of an improvement over the .30/06 to be worth the bother.

I agree, as would most the shooting public save a few gun loonies.

You need to get up to a 35Whelen or 9.3x62 to get away from the 30-06 to make it worth it. That in itself is not a slam towards the 338-06 as it puts it in very good company with the 30-06.

As SMART as you are ? you cannot Possibly Believe the 35 Whelen is a BETTER Cartridge then then 338-06 A Square - Do YOU ? :p RJ

I have always wanted one but I have a 35 Whelen and a 9.3x62. One day I will do it

On paper the 338-06 may look slightly better but I’ve killed animals very close to 400yards with my whelen

SMART?? .... I'm just smart enough to know that I'm not the smartest guy here. :)

These discussions always go the same route, my comments included. The 338-06 always gets compared to the 30-06 and the 35W as it splits the diff between the two. FTR, I did not say the 338 was better than the 35W. What I intended to state was that the 338 was so close to the 06 that there is very little advantage to own one over the 06. :)

For a cartridge to be "better" it really depends on what one is planning on using a rifle for & how. For example ..... One could say that a 300 magnum is "better" than a 308, but if deer only is hunted and all shots are under 200yds, this in not true. The 308 is more than enough to do the job well and is not bettered by the larger 300.

Most folks want a 338 or similar med bore for heavier game. If long range is required there are "better" choices, 300 and 338 magnums included. Who actually buys a 338-06 or 35W for LR shooting anyways? If heavy bullets for larger game, both are about even with the 35 getting a slight edge. Oft times bullet choice gets pushed out there for an advantage of the 338 but how many folks actually shoot that bigger list of bullets? Not many. There are plenty of 35cal bullets out there for any 35W shooter to be quite happy. BTDT.

Is the 35W better than the 338-06? Probably not. Is the 338-06 better than the 30-06, no. Is the 280 better than the 30-06? etc etc etc. The debates never end & no one loses those gun loony discussions.

The Baby 338 Fed is a GREAT cartridge

I hope im going to like it. Itll likely be finished this coming winter as im laid off right now

Mine is a factory Tikka T3 SS LITE - i have installed a long bolt release and i use long cartridge mags so i can seat my bullets out at 3 + In( Coal ) I also installed a Yo Dave trigger spring and have my trigger set at 2 lbs now. I have just bought a Wildcat stock and its finished weight is only 21 ozs so that will lighten up the rifle to a 104 oz so 6. 5 lbs with the mag in it - Scope etc ready to shoot ! NICE ! :d RJ

By the way much superior cartridge to the 358 Win too ! :stirthepot2:
