Help identify custom rifle

I was pondering that last night actually. I'm going to try to distance my self from social media ( including this site as well ); I am (and I've noticed others are as well) a touch Sour these days... Isolation Blues, lol. It's no fun... being no fun.

I have a Model 70 375 H&H here - serial number on receiver has a "G" prefix (in a different font), and it does have the "anti-bind" lip, so I think it is 1968 - a push feed, of course. Pretty much standard - Winchester hinged floor plate, etc. I just tried it - accepts 3 rounds into magazine, then will chamber a 4th round inserted into chamber directly - can not put fourth round into magazine. Same as my push-feed Model 70 in 338 Win Mag. So, the rifle shown above has standard capacity mag - if not from Winchester, then similar size. Extra depth on the stock would be required for the "wood bottom" as shown on the OP's latest picture.

As for the comment about one piece base and mis-aligned scope base holes - if such is really an issue, then Redfield, Buehler, Millett, Leupold and others make two piece "twist in" type front bases with windage screws on rear base that accomplish the same thing.

I Hear Ya ! i'm in self isolation for 3 weeks nearly - Flu then Head Cold - nearly over it now - BUT who knows ! Ok going to play with rifles - load more shells etc etc etc

If it was my rifle I would be installing a two piece base and rings (Leupold Dual Dovetail) and an appropriate length scope. The two piece will make it much nicer loading and unloading and the Dual Dovetail are super strong and stable.
 
Perhaps a smith built this for himself or a customer with that last name. Probably had the parts laying around including a stock originally shaped for a p17 but un-inletted. This would be a plausible explanation for that stock on a model 70. Can you inlet an already inletted p17 stock to fit a 70 without having to add a lot of bedding material? Is it even bedded at all ,for that matter?Wonder if it started life as 300 H&H or not? It's a nice looking rifle regardless of who built it.

No markings other than what I have shown in pics and a ser # which is engraved in the same font as the other markings . previous owner had no info other than , " got it from a guy last fall " ha
 
P17 stocks and Model 70 actions are no where close.

This is a custom stock done by a talented 'smith' in his style.

The ser. # is G 985435 but appears to perhaps have been redone to the same font style as the rest of the markings so perhaps it is a Win # . I will do some digging on this . The one piece base ,,,, some folks like them ! ha Thank you for your help , I'll check out the G prefix !!

It may well have been posted a week or so ago , however , I only got it a couple of days ago and posted here to see if anyone recognizes the name on it .
 
I might have the following mixed up a bit, but the "G" prefix on Winchester serial numbers has something to do with a 1968 American firearm Act that required something or other - Winchester started using the "G" to indicate compliance with whatever that Act required. I am sure someone will be along shortly to set me straight. My 375 H&H has 6 digits after the G - 861### (I believe from 1968) so likely a year or so older than yours. My 338 Win Mag has 7 digits after the G 1597### and I believe it was made in early 1980's

From Winchesterguns.com - scroll way down to page 33 - Model 70 - G957995 was last number for 1970; G1018991 last number for 1971, so makes your receiver from 1971.

Thanks for that , saved me some time looking !! ha 1971 vintage . I just found a rifle made by Vernon Carron that has a stock design very similar , perhaps this maker copied one of their designs ?

In the old days I would have been tempted to fire Salter a pic of it, on the off chance it had run through his hands. I was wondering if it was a Galazan item. Mind you thats only because I am lazy, and in the past custom guns in the Valley tended to come from New England more often than Canada.
