I like old Savages.
My 950T 223 Rem project last year turned out great and so I was on the hunt for something similar to build for this year.
A nice late 70's Savage 112 single shot varmint rifle in 22/250 Rem came along in the EE. I bought it and shot it. It was the perfect place to start.
Then I refinished the stock in oil. Next I had RKS Ron Smith rebore the 26" blued barrel to a 6.5mm gain 8 twist. He did a great job. I wanted to chamber it in 6.5/284 Norma so I took the newly rebored barrel to my gunsmith who chambered and bedded it. I gave him a dummy round 143 ELDX at 3.15" to throat it. It was bang on.
I got it out to the range yesterday to put a few test rounds through it. First I shot three 120 Sierra's through it to get it zeroed. Then I shot three 143gr ELDX 49.5 gr IMR 4350 @ 3.08" OAL as it was a load I have for another gun. They went 0.29" at 2900 fps. Wow, even dead center. This is going to be fun!
Just wanted to share.
