H41 equivalent

IIRC, it was the equivalent of H4198. Dave.

Nope, it was the equivalent of a slow lot of W760.

The designation of the powder is H414 slo lot 10. About 5% slower than W760/H414. Load data for W760/H414 is safe for the powder

Please correct me if I'm wrong, I've never seen an H41 or #41 powder from Higginson's or Ammomart.

OP, is your powder ball powder or extruded granules???

I suspect the description on the container has been damaged???

That's good info, thanx for posting it. I bought a lot of powder from Tom and he sent a lot to me for developing loads for the papers you just checked. I never saw the H41.

Old man Higginson was quite a character. When he passed away, his nephew, Andrew I believe his name is, took over the business and changed the name eventually from Higginson Powders to Ammomart. Still a great business to deal with. Too bad the current owner is no longer going after large lots of surplus powder any more though. IIRC, back in the day, Higginson had powder magazines all over the place in Hawkesbury area.

Actually Andrew changed it from Ammomart to Higginson Powders !
I used to go over and yack with Tom when I visited my parents - you could throw a stone from their driveway and hit his place ( the Higginson are distant cousins )! LOL
I love one story old Tom told me many years ago when he phone up Hodgdon and asked about some 4831 surplus powder .
He told the lady on her phoned he wanted their powder .
She said "Sir yes we have lots , 1,200 pounds ,how much do you want ?"
He said " All of it , ship it please!"Laugh2

I'd have to ask but I don't think Andrew is dealing with the explosives business any more , Tom was very big into that as well.
I have not been back for almost 20 years but do talk to Andrew occasionally now when I order powder .

I guess my memory is working just fine, lol. Dave

I apologize if you felt I dissed you. It certainly wasn't the intent.

I wish I had known about the H41 powder. Somehow I missed it completely.

Good on your memory.

I would really like to see some surplus powders come available again. It still seems to be available in large quantities in the US. To much red tape?? Maybe Ganderite knows the answer.

Tom had a working agreement with Hodgdon's that went beyond business. He was a personal friend of the family.

1200 pounds sounds like a lot to you and I but he made much bigger deals than that on a regular basis. As usual, he didn't like to embellish his deals.

The last time I spoke with him, he was not long for this world. I had just finished going through the process of forcing Non Hodgkins' Lymphoma into remission and he was in the final stages of his battle with Cancer. That was about the time H414SL10 came into his facility.

He asked me if he could send me ten pounds and a mixed batch of a thousand different bullets and primers to develop some loads for his hand outs. He had held off asking, because he knew I wasn't in a proper state of mind to develop loads. I helped with 7x57, 30-06, 308Win and 243Win.

I really miss talking a couple of times every month with Tom. He never mentioned to me that he had learned he also had Cancer, while I was going through mine. It was only after my treatments were over that he divulged the information. He was still working from his bed and taking orders, right up to the end.

As Canada's largest powder and explores distributor I can only imagine the amount of powder he dealt with!
And yes, he was a very unassuming person and just fantastic to talk with , I used to love going into the shop and poke around and talk with him:)

Thanks for that correction iron cat, you're right of course, my bad switching the names around f:P:. Yeah, those days of inexpensive surplus powder are gone now. I still have a part can of #48 that I'm keeping as a reminder. I sure wish Higginson would get some more of that WC735 powder though. I used my last bit sometime last year:)

BH, No offense taken whatsoever. You and I have much in common as to reloading, so it was water off a duck's back, lol.
Only reason I remembered is because I was loading for an older straight-walled chambering in which H4198 worked well.
I phoned Thomas and he sent me a few pounds of H41 to try. Very similar to H4198 in actual use. Regards, Dave.
