Low Cost Starter 9mm

The more I read here the more I realize I really need to physically go in and test one out or at least hold it and get the feel of it first. I may have to wait til things open up again.

Well , yes and no.
I just sold a brand new G22 for $520 , so that’s pretty cheap.
But.. most guys will buy a Glock and first upgrade is the trigger, second is the sights.
When all is said and done ,an $800 G17 will end up a $1100 G17.

I second this. Very impressive pistol for the price. When I was shopping around it was between the Canik, M&Pver2 and cz p10. P10 didnt feel good in my hands ergo wise, but still really solid. M&P and Canik were top 2 choices. Had several m&Pver1 before so went with the Canik. Canik feels great while shooting. I liked the sights for it better and the gun feels very solid.

Some of the best pistol shooters I know shoot M&P's, and don't sell them, so don't talk such nonsense, the only sucker is the one not smart enough to know when they are wrong .
As a matter of fact, my buddy is a Master Class IDPA shooter who shoots nothing but M&P's,, so unless your credentials can back up your opinion you really shouldn't make such ridiculous statements

To all of you mentioning doing a .22 first. I've been advised that quite a few times too by others. In fact I've shot a .22 handgun lots of times. Just not the same to me. I did learn pretty fast though about how terrible of a shot I am! Range instructor really helped me with it and I've been doing much better.


Someone else mentioned FN. I used to use the FNA1 in the reserves years ago. I know they are prohibited but I'd love to have one for nostalgia's sake. I did't know they made pistols too.

I had a gen 1 in 9mm. I regret selling it. I will pick one up again someday.

I got a buddy who can do that as well,he’s quite a bit older than I am (73) but he can shoot anything accurately .
Experience goes a long ways.

edgy and I know the same 3 classification Master in IDPA. And edgy speaks the truth. Every handgun the guy owns is an M&P; 9mm, .40 and .45. And the guy prides himself on never cleaning his guns!!

I also got a Gen 1 2 years ago for a great price. It came with an Apex trigger which really improves the old heavy trigger. I switch between it and my Glocks. It’s actually a never sell as it’s always worked and is a pleasure to shoot.

We have an A class IPSC buddy who shoots a CZ Shadow. The post match razzings between us about our choice of pews pews is bordering on epic. We are all so stubborn and dug in now that none of us will switch out our guns for another, just based on principle and dumb pride!

Enjoy your Canik when it arrives, they are a great handgun and I have no doubt you will enjoy it, I've been fortunate enough to play with one on numerous occasions and they are an excellent package :)

That was true two weeks ago but I'm not so sure anymore.

I've had no trouble finding components, many at the lowest prices I've seen in years, over the past few weeks. Did the math and from my buy last week I can build 9mm for 16 cents per round using Campro 115gr, Federal primers, and Titegroup. Best I've seen for bulk during the same time frame is near double.

You are right about equipment costs, but are you familiar with the children's book "If you give a mouse a cookie"? If the OP is like 99% of us there's no way he stops with just one 9mm, and once you start shooting more exotic cartridges the equipment gets paid for quickly!


OP, if you like the S&W go for it. Nothing wrong with the M&P and used ones pop up frequently so you can save yourself some coin.
 
M&Ps definitely don’t suck - and I’m a Shadow owner. I happen to shoot the M&P very well. Last time I did a back-to-back comparison, I actually shot the M&P better than my Shadow. I think it was more due to the fit, (need wider grip panels on my Shadow), but the M&P held its own.
 
Op, There’s nothing wrong with M&P’s, some people just want to bash something they don’t like. Shadows are great, very easy to shoot compared to most polymer guns. I prefer m&p’s as they just feel right in my hand. They work good for me. Buy a used one as cheap as you can if your not sure, or ask someone at a range to try one out.

What ever you choose, remember it’s the Indian and not the bow that makes the shot.
 
Doesn't get any cheaper than a Norinco NP22 (SIG P226 clone).

$300 used. $350 plus taxes and shipping brand new.

Getting the short reset trigger makes it even better.
