Help identify custom rifle

I am always amazed at the amount of Gunsmiths who can't/wont checker.

It takes a lot of time and effort and some natural talent to become proficient at checkering. If one does not do excellent work why would he bother to do it at all. I did respectable stock work at one time including checkering and carving but with today's eyesight and old age and a declining level of quality I stopped doing it several years ago. Lack of customers willing to pay for it was also part of that decline. You have to checker often to keep your skill level.

It would be very nice if it turns out to be a case of incorrect data entered by the police or a duplicate serial number.

I've been hoping for that very thing !!!! However it will be what it is and if it has to be returned , that's what will happen . BUT , I keep hoping !!!!!! ha

Is it just me or is there something different about the cocking piece? It doesn’t look quite like any model 70 cocking piece that I’ve ever seen.

Gorgeous!

And agreed on stocks Dennis, have been asked many times if I’d make one for a client or other fellow who saw one of mine and answer was always “better to hire Ralf Martini“. As frankly, he’ll do it better, and I’d charge the same to justify the time. After the cost of a blank worth putting the time into, and the hours, even for money that makes people scoff I’m likely not paying myself more than what I could make flipping burgers.

I do enjoy doing it, but not as a full time job, I have a couple of those.

Pretty sure this exact rifle was posted in an FB group a week or two ago, easy to remember a rifle like that, walnut and steel vintage rifles group....not sure if it was the same OP or not....I recall reading they thought rebarrelled and restocked m70, but might find some more info if you look over there

BRvalley: Do you remember the name of that group? Appreciate it. :)

Edit: May have found it. Walnut and Steel Vintage Rifles Shotguns and Pistols
