I'd say a very low power scope such as a 1-4x 20mm. I just put a 1.5-6x 20 mm on my .444 and might swap it around as needed on my 30-30. Only for load development I should mention. I may just go back to open sights, the 30-30 IMHO just doesn't reach out far enough with ample energy to warrant a scope.

My opinion is that it is an effective gun up to approximately 200 yards. I have a Weaver 2.5X fixed on mine and that seems just fine for me. If you get a variable perhaps something within the 1-5X range.

a VX1 Leupold, 1-4x20mm w/ Heavy Duplex would be an excellent choice, and affordable for most @ $280 or so

another good choice would be a VXI or VXII 2-7x33

Careful. Scoping a lever is grounds for being struck by lightning!
Not to mention that it is also morally reprehensible and will cause leprosy to the bearer of said scoped rifle.

This is the only viable option for a lever action.

It's a personal preference but I'd rather use a low powered scope then peep sights. Peep sights suck for the faster shots or in poor lighting conditions.

I have a 3-9x32 Bushnell on the 30-30 (Winchester 94) but I leave the scope on the lowest magnification all the times. I use see through scope mounts so the iron sights are fully functional too. Very versatile aiming system. ;)

Another thing to consider is whether the gun is top eject or angle eject. Or what kind of action it has.

I'd rather have a Yugo in 7.62x39mm. ;)

Excellently stated, however, some of us more purer purists may question why you showed it with the insert in the aperature?
Others may say the Williams Fool Proof, with "hunter knobs," is a little neater on the 94, than the target knobs on the Lyman.

Yeah actually, I was thinking about mentioning it but my Winchester 94 is an angle eject rifle so even with regular mounting bases it would work fine. Also, I don't think many people would mount a scope on a top eject rifle.

Te4ll that to the doe that jumped the logging road about two years ago, with ten minutes of legal remaining. I had about two seconds to make the shot, and she fell in a heap on the far side of the road.
Williams peep sight, and a standard front bead.
