I find myself carrying either my Ruger PC carbine or my sub 2K a lot out in the bush, both shoot either the 124 or 147 very well. So what would be the best for, lets say Cougar defense, ( to me they are more of a concern than bears )
124 Hornady XTP or 147 Hornady XTP. From what I had read 147's have good penetration in 9mm but are obviously slower.
So lets hear some opinions.

Anything is better than nothing. Ideally you would have HP +P ammo. I just use what I shoot regularly. The ammo you have with the most ftlbs of energy will work best.

Also the best cougar defense is a good knife that is easily accessible on your hip. You think those sneaky buggers are gonna let you see em before they attack you? Unlikely.

I caught one stalking me and scared it off but it was just luck that I happened to stop for a minute and look around. It made me wonder how many times I've been stalked without noticing.

Honestly firearms are great and all but in real world scenarios where you run into aggressive wildlife, a pistol or knife is what you will be needing. Since a pistol is out of the question for 99.9% of folks in this country, a fairly sizable knife is best. Any predator (or other animal) can be on you inside of a second even if they are like 50yds away. How do I know this? I have spent more than 2 years cumulative time in the deep bush for work and have run into my fair share of wildlife and underwear changing moments. To be clear I've never been physically attacked. My best weapon has been my loud voice so far. Do I still carry a rifle? Hell yes. Do I expect to have time to effectively use it if I am getting attacked? No.

Best cougar defence I can think of is a beard and beer gut....Up to you which you choose....9mm would be effective as well but could require closer quarters risk

The thing I learned in high power sport rocketry is that a fast opening recovery chute will often result in a catastrophic separation.
High speed is the culprit. So tricks like shroud line rings are used to slow down the chute's opening.
Or, better still, time your chute deployment for minimum airspeed at apogee.
The exact opposite applies to hollow points. They're sh!t at low speed. They need the speed to expand well.
Notice Top Fuel dragsters pop their chutes quick to slow down pronto.
Pistol caliber carbines are the Top Fuelers of the 9mm world. They'll get a 147 grainer to expand right.
You'll actually get LESS penetration with a BIGGER wound channel with a faster hollow point.
Lot safer in a confined space, I'd think...

You can also carry a short shotgun legally it too is another option. It can double down as bear defense too loaded with double ought buck and slugs

This ^^^ People defence, 9mm is fine. Bush carry, use a 12 gauge shorty loaded with slugs. No comparison to a pistol calibre.

A good Kabar style knife and a Remington 870 with 12" Dlask Arms short barrel is what I carry outside hunting season.

Me too (king of)... Mossberg 500 ATI Tactical or my 14" Canuck "Tactical" and my handy German-made Ruko bowie knife. The Mossberg is pretty light, but the Canuck is lighter.

I thought that due to the limited case capacity of the 9mm Parabellum compared to say, the .357 Magnum, that the velocity gains from longer 9mm carbine barrels when compared to 5" pistol barrels were kinda small?

Checkout Luckygunners video on ammunition for the PCC
You want a 147gr so it won’t over expand and under penetrate
I’d be happy with a 147 XTP if I couldn’t get HST or Gold dots.

Probably correct. I want to play around a bit with some slower burning powders to see what kind of velocity increases I can get over the claimed velocities from factory ammo in a 4-5" barrel. Have managed 1400 fps with 115gr bullets over 4.6gr of Tite Group thus far. Plan to try Power Pistol next and maybe Blue Dot as well whenever I can find some more(or pull some from 40S&W rounds I have loaded I suppose, but that is more work than I want to put in, lol).

I prefer Bullets with good expansion and multiple cutting petals and a 124gr or 135gr weight. Gold Dot, V Crown, PDX1’s are on my list. The XTP’s do not mushroom sufficiently. The larger the wound channel the better.

My vote is Gold Dots. Bonded, never have a jacket separate. Because any shots you get off are going to be up close at carbine velocity. That's why I choose bonded cores.

for that application

135gr +p critical duty 9mm

Ive tried independance 9mm 115gr hollowpoint from my just right carbine. Took the ribcage of a small bear about 175lb bear. Filled the chest cavity with fat and trimmings wrapped it in the hide and backed off to 35 yards and double tapped it with these hollow points from my just right carbine. Both hit ribs in and out and buried about 2.5-3" into the sand behind it with perfect expansion. I was surely impressed. I havent been able to figure out what exact bullet it uses but its factory loaded. Blue and grey box
