So I'm finally done getting my RPAL, and my first transfer is underway -a Glock G17.

I want to get involved in IPSC, just for fun. I don't see a full bore race gun anytime in my future.

When our club gets to setting up a Black Badge course here, I'll need some additional equipment.

So, what can people recommend for a nube to the sport, on somewhat of a budget (yeah, I know, wrong sport for playing cheap...) in the way of holster, and mag pouches?

I see Fobus has fairly inexpensive stuff...any thoughts in that area?

And what is the minimum for mags to run the course?

Thanks.

Howdy Tim

Either Fobus (you can get it through Phoenix in Edmonton) or Uncle Mike (wholesale sports :{ ) are both good choices for a beginner for both mag pouches and Holster. You want 4 mags on your belt and one in the gun and if possible a stripper mag in your back pocket. Spend the best money you can on ear protection. Check out Kingland and Wesclean to see what they have in stock. Electronic muffs are nice but not a necessity. For safety glasses buy what ever is on sale but buy lots as they get scratched up a lot and a new pair is a must in your bag. A good heavy belt is nice to have and a competition belt is even better. A CR from Phoenix or a JR from Freedom works well.

Just find a cheap holster that you find comfortable and will cover the trigger guard., for mag holders you can look at getting springfield xd mag holders - just need 4 or 5 magazines to start ipsc. Now if you really want to go full out $350 or so get a full CR Speed set up. then if you decide to upgrade your pistol (production to open like i did) you only need to replace the holster. If you end up not liking IPSC, can always resell everything. Reason why I went with the full CR Speed setup going into my blackbadge was that reason as well as if you want to learn something right start it out right.

Dont go (cheap) it will only cost you more in the long run and you will not get your money back when it comes time to sell your cheap rig.Sounds like your not in a hurry so buy a pice at a time

Spend wisely, look at stuff that will be adaptable if you do get serious. Spend the money on a belt like the Safariland inner and outer velcro. Same goes for pouches. The Safariland 771 or 773 pouches should meet the rules for production, but you won't have to buy new ones if you go to Standard/Limited or Open

That just leaves a holster to start out with and theres many good ones on the market now for whatever class or gun you start with. Just make sure it makes sense for you.
And don't forget, there's lots of helpful IPSC shooters out there that may let you borrow or try out their gear, find out if it will work for you.

I can remember whan I started out, used a Beretta 92f in a thumbsnap duty holster to pass the black badge course (I like doing things the hard way) Never thought I'd get into the competition guns (back then there were no divisions, only run what you brung. Glock competes directly with comped .38 supers. I think within a couple of months I had traded the Beretta for a Glock and the duty holster for an Ernie Hill. Which lasted about a year until I had a P9 open gun built...now look at me...lol

That is some old footage for sure PH.
For the cost of a Uncle Mikes holster and their simplicity they get my vote too.
They will work well for the course and competition when you are getting started and make up your mind where you want to go with the game.
If you decide to upgrade, you will have a good backup holster incase the old one gives out.
You cannot go wrong with a good belt right off the mark, it will really help keep all the gear in the right place instead of flopping around all over the place.

Good Luck

:eek:PH you just dated yourself there, Safariland belts and pouchs are so 90's:rolleyes: They are a good product but these days there is better out ther at a better price. CR speed belts are the hot ticket these days you get both the inner and outer for less then a safariland outer. For mag pouchs CR-Speed is at the top again 1 pouch is good for STI/SVI, para,CZ, Tanfoglio, Glock and most other double stack mags.
Uncle Mikes makes a great holster and double mag pouch for under $20.

I have a rig in the EE that I will let go to a new IPSC shooter for a deal...It is mid range and in excellent condition.

JR speed belt and mag pouches...The holster is 'Side-armour'

It fits a G17 or G22 and the pouches include single stack plates should you decide to go that route in the future. I am a size 36 belt. I did well for a noob running it so I think it very well might be a 'lucky rig' as I am no champ!

Check it out if you like...

Lol...tell ya what, if you can beat me with my Safariland gear, I'll consider switching...

I went cheap when I started IPSC and I don't regret it.

Of course, 4 years later I've got some high speed stuff but I don't feel that my initial purchases were wasted money. I've been able to trade, sell or give away much of my early equipment to encourage new shooters and friends to try the game.

For the cheap stuff, Fobus holsters can be a little sticky and I think the Uncle Mikes is a better buy (though not IDPA legal - if you were thinking about shooting both). The best buy right now is the Bladetech competition special - you can order it from their website - holster + mag pouches - and top notch stuff.

pitdogboy deal is pretty decent, but for a hundred more you could probably pick up a CR Speed holster as well. Did my first day of blackbadge with 2 XD holsters and the stock holster it comes with, hated it, bought an entire CR Speed rig for about $400+ and I havn't looked back :)

PH, won't hitting you with your rig damage it :D Sounds like a challenge, but I don't have an open gun anymore, and I was never that good with it anyways. You shoot Stanadard at all? If I had known busting your balls was all it took to get you down here I would have did that the first time I ran into you.
