358 yeti

Brybenn it sounds like you’re a perfect candidate for a .243, .25, or a 6.5. The “Yeti” is going to kick more than those options and frankly, it’s not going to kill a deer or black bear better. You’re clearly set on the idea, have fun, and let us know what it harvests.

I am predominantly a hunter...I prefer trim bolt action rifles in the field... just personal preference.

I’m with you. I was sent one of the early non-restricted “ARs” to test run, and frankly I really, really wanted to like it. In the end it was significantly heavier than my mountain rifles, more picky with loads, and rather cantankerous for a guy who can get by fine with a single shot. Slim and trim, it was not, glad they’re legal but not for me.

Rather than comparing favorably, why not just do the .358 Win? Unless you are going to use it in an AR, might as well go with the .35 Rem as Ardent suggests or the .358 Win, which will do more than the Yeti. If you just want to try something new, I get that, but trying to "justify" it here in Canada, your best argument is "just because."

I have subscribed to a bunch of YouTube channels since the Kung flu lockdown. Seriously considering unsubscribing to Military Arms, as almost everything he reviews is a prohib in Kanada. I just google the firearm and dont bother watching.

Night time pig hunt using the 358 Yeti. 180gr Speer Hot core @ 2650 FPS sure seems to slam those hogs! Recovered bullets look good too. Those night time hog hunts seem pretty fun. ;)

Interesting cartridge.

I gotta agree with Hoyt though, whats the point? If you want 35 REM performance from a modern gun using a modern case design, then I'm sure at bolt-gun pressures you'll be able to surpass the 35 Rem, but its never going to beat out the 358win performance-wise.

Of course, if we all approached this logically, we'd all shoot the same thing, so let us know how it turns out!

Yeah, but how many pigs did they shoot before they got that nice DRT video shot? They're not going to show you the ones that got away after all... And yes, night time hog hunts do look like fun! Its on my to-do list eventually. My old friend lives in Austin, if I ever get down to visit him I'll definitely be looking to get some Not-OK-in-Canada shooting/hunting done, either at night of from a whirly bird...

Looks like they shot at least 2 pigs, maybe 3. I would expect a 358 WIN to drop a hog at 100-150 yards, and considering the load he is using is within 50-100 FPS of a 358 Win, the performance on game is not surprising.

I like that logic... I think the Yeti is probably within 75 fps of the .375 Ruger... it would make a great cartridge for the big bears or Canada's little bison... I understand there is a push to approve the Yeti for cape buffalo in Mozambique... it has the support of many PH's...

Looks like once again, Happy Hour at the Hoyt Household has turned into Happy Bender.

:)

Yes, but what magic is getting them within 50-100fps of the 358 Winchester with a case thats like 20% smaller capacity?

Read post #34

20% case capacity increase does not = 20% increase of velocity. The developers of this cartridge seem to be using pressure testing equipment and keeping pressures well within reason.

This thread has heaps of information about the 358 Yeti- load work ups, pressure testing, subsonic loads etc. Lots of tables and graphs if that is your thing.

It's nice to see pressure testing to demonstrate that even as the Yeti comes close to 358 Win standard velocities, it does not do so via over pressure- the way so many wildcats seem to get their magic velocity.

Lots of information on that thread with various powders and barrel lengths, lots of experimentation as the cartridge was being developed. Anyone that was thinking of building a 358 Yeti on a ATRS or MDI or a small bolt action should find some good information there.

Is 58k psi from a 308-size casehead safe in a standard AR15? I know the 45-50cal offerings are lower pressure due to the size of the case, not sure at what point that starts becoming an issue though? Isn't maximum pressure in an AR15 for the 6.5 Grendel only 52k PSI, which has a smaller base diameter?

They are using a bolt and extension rated for higher (65k PSI) pressure. It's not just a standard AR bolt that has been opened up for a .473 case head.

The Yeti is mildly interesting, but Iam with Greg on this one I dont see the point, but maybe if it was necked down to .338 we would have something.

The purpose of the cartridge is to allow close to 358 Winchester performance in an AR15 (or in Canada one of the similar NR platforms.) that's the whole point.

I certainly agree with you that a .338 caliber is more interesting than ..35 calibers. :)

It's an AR Elk Gun, not really relevant to this country.

Now if they necked it to 6mm and stuffed it in a 5.5lb CZ 527 they might have something.
