greetings,
yes, i know i could have placed this under ammo but....

question:
i am going coyote and i am going to be using 12 gauge #4 buck shot. i have only ever used slugs and bird shot for skeet so need a little help with figuring out the effective range of the #4 buck on hunting yotes.:shotgun:

haven't been able to book the ragne - to busy with work but puching holes in paper does not equal puching holes in yotes.

thanks for your help,
Tracker-trapper :D

ps- befor you tell me to go get a fast, flat shooting rife (yes, i'd love to- but not this year) i'm going to hunting befor and after deeer season, and this is the only gun/ammo i can really use here in nova scotia.

Answer your own question with some cardboard boxes and pieces of plywood or old phone books. Set a support at a set distance and give yourself a target with some resistence. Fire a calculated number of shots and measure the results. You will get more effective training and positive muscle memory from shooting than from typing.

Look into the legality of using a shotgun first. It's very likely ok, but CYA.
You'll have to pattern your shotgun the same as you do with any other shot. Once you've done that, you're looking at well under 50 yards. At 75 buckshot of any size is useless. Not enough energy left nor enough pellets hitting to be reliable.
The choke you have matters too. The more open the choke, the fewer pellets that will hit Wiley.
Since you're, evidently, not interested in keeping the hides, you'd be better off using slugs. Once you've sighted with them, as you know, the accuracy at 100 yards can be truly astounding. Even with a smooth bore and iron sights.

hey thanks,
1) like i said i haven't had time for the range. i always go every saterday morining but i have been working 7 days a week. but that is a good idea about setting up my own tests. and yes i do belive with the hands on aproach.:D
i was hoping some one had a little more expeience with #4 to share.

2) yea, patteren it.full choke. gotcha. i am gonna keep the pelts for myself. i can deal with some holes. it's just according to the regs. here i can only use a #4 shot. no slugs. i have had my shot gun to the range (smoth bore iron site) and i too was blow away by how accurate they are. i shot mostly at 50 and had them in an easy 5 inch group but.... not allowed to use slugs unless i have a deer licence. and i want to take some before and after the deer season.

3) i have been having a really hard time finding them in halifax/dartmouth. any help from the local guys on where to buy some??? (not mail order??) tried several ct and several wally wolrd and lovettes too

thanks guys'

We use 4buck for yotes when hunting bush. The longest shot last year was 73 paces and there was 4 pellets in the yote. They are very effective up to 75 yards. Longest shot was 124 paces using 00 buck by a old timer that can only carry a single shot. But like said before pattern your gun.

thanks ,
i was just woundering what peoples personal experiencs were. thanks for sharing..

on a personal note: just got back from my fith store that had ammo and buck shot but no #4. arrggg!!!:runaway:

:Dfinding the ammo is as hard as finding yotes.

thanks again

At 75 buckshot of any size is useless. Not enough energy left nor enough pellets hitting to be reliable.

Sunray said it right... I passed on a VERY nice buck one year when I surprised him while bird hunting with my dog. The buck took about 10 good jumps and went from 20 yards to around 75 yards, in the time it took me to exchange the birdshot to buckshot... I stood there and watched him watching me... No use wounding a buck with buckshot, so I passed... I do have a fond recollection about how lucky that buck was that I wasn't prepared...

Cheers
Jay
P.S. I shot a deer at close range with buckshot... never again, I didn't like the results, but your mileage may vary...
