I thought I'd post a few photos of something you don't see up close every day - a nice new (to me) 5.56mm Israeli Galil SAR (Short Automatic Rifle) in Excellent condition. As a 12(3) Converted-Automatic, this formerly select-fire Israeli Military carbine has been neutered to remove the capability for automatic fire. As a result of judicious grinding, parts removal and welding to prevent parts replacement, this firearm has been permanently altered to fire in semi-automatic mode only - one shot fired for each pull of the Trigger. As such, it no longer meets the technical definition of an "Assault Rifle". It is now simply a semi-automatic carbine like any other of the genre - capable of firing a maximum of 5 shots, one shot at a time. Despite the fact that it shares the same action and calibre of cartridge with many other Restricted and non-Restricted semi-automatic rifles, this 12(3) firearm is house-bound. The CFO will not issue a permit to transport the firearm to a range for the purposes of discharge because as a former automatic rifle, this neutered example poses far too much of a public safety threat to be fired on a government-approved firing range.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

This Galil SAR was most likely arsenal refinished by Israeli Military Industries before being diverted to the civilian converted-auto market some time in the 1980s. As such it is in immaculate condition both inside and out. If this carbine could only talk! Note the markings in Hebrew and the Star of David Israeli Military Acceptance Stamp on the Left Side of the Receiver behind the Handguard Bracket. The SAR was issued to Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers (eg. Squad Leaders), Radio Operators, Crew-Served Weapon Teams, and Special Operations Forces.

Pictured below for comparison is my Galil ARM (Automatic Rifle Machinegun), the heavier full-length version of the 5.56mm Galil with a longer Barrel and built-in Bipod for use as a Squad Automatic Rifle. This example was manufactured as a semi-automatic-only Sporting Rifle by Israeli Weapon Industries back in 1990. I purchased it brand new in the cosmoline in 1991 for $1500 - a very expensive outlay in those days! The ARM is easily distinguished from the SAR and AR (Automatic Rifle) variants due to its distinctive Wooden Handguards which provide superior insulation against the increased heat of automatic fire.

Nice. I've done a little research but can't seem to find any photos or description of how the sight mount attaches??? looks like it belongs there.

The mount slides into the purpose-machined slot on the Left Side of the Receiver using a dovetail system with a rotating latch. It is really simple, quick and accurate (repeatable), however the position of the optic over the Left Side of the Receiver (rather than over the center-line) was a mistake. It is impossible to obtain a cheek-weld with the Right Cheek as the optic is too far to Left of the firearm to rest the head on the Buttstock. A great idea, but terribly executed....

So its been permanently modified to semi auto only why isn't it just restricted due to barrel length . I cant figure out why the 12.3 category even exists. I also have 12.3. But if the rifle has been modified to semi auto in such a manner that it cant be readily converted back than why aren't they just semi auto's . It is beyond me

Yeah that's a little strange and bit of a dichotomy. Spend the time and dollars to engineer the excellent mount attachment system yet, essentially, provide practical purpose for only lefties.

Our prohib rules are utterly inane. It's essentially like they want to find any way possible to prevent you from getting to use what you purchased, regardless of the inherent function of the firearm.

Awesome looking rifle though!

Reminds me of my youth growing up in Israel. My cousins were in the armored corps so they had the Galil SARs...been in love with them ever since.
