Can someone explain the differences between the Commander and government?
I know the commander is shorter, but if you had two equal brands , what would be the differences in regards to accuracy, muzzle flip , etc?

Thanks

The Commander has a slightly shorter sight radius which theoretically may make sight picture re-acquisition tougher. It is also lighter which may make felt recoil more. No real difference in grip and girth.

In practice, if you have an all steel Commander and you already are proficient in shooting, there is not much difference.

When I owned 1911s, I had a S&W Scandium Commander and an all steel full sized SIG. I didn’t notice any real difference at all.

Hey thanks,
It’s not for me, I’m a 9 mil guy lol.
It’s for my son, he’s 14 and he liked the Spring field that I used to own .
He can shoot the 1911 .45acp much more accurately and really has a thing for 1911.
Got to be SS with wood grips. Lol
So what makes one 1911 more accurate than another?

Better barrel? Better trigger.

I was thinking maybe something in the $1000 range.

You can get 1911s in 9mm also.

Yes, better barrel, better trigger, tighter fitting between slide and frame, some say better bushing and guide rod....

There will be others who can suggest their favorite brand around $1000. Grew up on 1911s but left that game a while ago.

Unless you're older, in which case shorter sight radius is easier to focus with. - dan

He’s only 14 and has eyes like a Hawk .. ha ha
He’s just fixated with the 1911.

I had a Springfield 1911 RO chambered in 9 mm,I didn’t find it anymore accurate than my Glock.

I also had a Springfield 1911 RO chambered in .45acp, which was a tack driver.

I’m basically wanting to know if he ,at 14 would find any difference between the Commander and the Government. Though I suspect he’s going to want the Government model, and probably in Colt.lol.
I told him I’ll buy him one, the rest is on him, when he’s old enough.:)

Would a cheaper rem or Ruger shoot as well as the more expensive Colts or Springfield ?

I was trained with a colt combat commander. Put on a good set of sights , new safety, and tune it .
Try and stay as basic as you can and it will keep you safe.
I also have Colt Combat 45's that Colt made. Great guns, it's just a matter of barrel length

I started my 1911 collection with a Springfield Range Officer in 45 ACP. It's a reliable tack driver. If you want accuracy, Government is the way to go. I have a S&W 1911SC in 45 ACP, and the lighter, Scandium alloy frame plus shorter slide makes the felt recoil more noticeable and it is a little bit harder to rack the slide.

My 2 cents.
I find the commander is harder to get back on follow up shots. jumps more.
I find the 5 inch generally gave me more accuracy at longer distance.
They throw the 5 inch barrel sites on the shorter commander, and I find it doesnt work as well.....makes
the Point of aim is slightly different.

Government recoils a little less. More weight out front. Other than that, I find them both easy to shoot well. - dan

A 9mm commander will shoot lighter than you gov't 45. I have both and prefer the 9mm commander

The frames are the same size, the only difference is the slide and barrel length. For accuracy, the barrel is the key. you can get match barrels pretty easily.

For a quality stainless 9mm commander 1911, check out Dlask. The have a gunsmithing combo that's meant for the end user to fit and put together, but they'll do it for you also and you'll end up with a high quality Canadian made unit. Might be slightly higher than your $1000 budget depending on the parts you choose.
