When does installing a pistol grip on a shotgun change it to restricted?

20G 870, 20 inch factory barrel, factory stock. This is an extra stock, can I cut at the black lines and still be non-restricted, or does a pistol grip make it restricted. OAL will be 31 inches or more. I know the cutting and length isn't a problem, but not familiar with how pistol grip plays into it.

Thanks

If it's not shorter than 26 inches overall and you didn't chop the barrel down yourself below 18" you're good to go. General rule of thumb as far as I know is no shorter than 18.5". It leaves some meat there for mods or crowning or w/e and legal leeway.

That would be one ugly pistol grip if you cut it. 2 hollow holes to look at. Just buy an actual pistol grip for $15 or so.

Well it is pretty ugly now. It also has damage on the other side from the previous owner. It is essentially garbage now that I have a replacement.

Haven't seen many stocks available for 20G 870, which is why my first thought was to cut and try and save this, but the reason this became an extra stock today is because I just bought an adapter so I can use 12G 870 stocks on this gun now. You are absolutely right, I can buy a raptor, pistol, or any other stock for it. Nine years I've been limited to factory Remington parts, mostly.

Still, probably gonna cut this for fun, lol.

check out the Mess Tactical Lucy and you can then use any 12ga 870 stock.

This.

Keep in mind if you wanted a pistol and went a folding stock route, the legal measurements are made when the stock is folded.

Actually, it is 660mm or 26"(25.98").

Basically if it’s a pistol grip like the Houge pistol grip a 18.5” barrel keeps you over the 26” OAL, if it’s a birds head grip a 14” barrel keeps you in the legal OAL.

Thank you

You can fill the holes with foam and paint or epoxy over to make a little more professional looking

Good call, I will probably do exactly that if I can't get what I want using heat.

Yes indeed. That is the adapter I found. Wish I had it 9 years ago. I am going to put a Magpul SGA on this 20G 870.

Thanks

20G 870 hand guards have always had the same problem. The only 20G 870 tactical type I could find is an obnoxious Aluminum ATI unit. As much as I hate the look, it is actually very comfortable, and has excellent grip. I see the 20G 870 Raptors now have Magpul hand guard, but the Magpul product page only lists it for the 12G 870. Not sure if Remington or Magpul added an adapter for 20-12 hand guards.
