I've never really cared to hunt fox, cant eat them why bother for me... tho lately a fox has been developing a taste for my chickens and ducks. Yesterday my boy saw him around 5 pm right outside his window but by the time I got to my rifle all that was left was a pile of feathers...
I quickly searched my property for evidence of feathers and a den but found nothing other than some left over turkey feathers he must have left behind recently. I'll search the neighbors property shortly.
I plan on sitting in the treeline with my 223 this afternoon with hopes to see it, but wondering if anyone has any tips to help me out.
This thing has no fear. I have two german shepherds and my neighbor has one, the fact it came out that early in the day and killed with so many other scents present is alarming, and now that it has the taste for an easy meal I'm sure it wont stop until all my birds are gone.

Ya too bad you have to get rid of it.... He, she might have a litter to care for at this time of year.... and they are a pretty cool animal to have around, but then again, I have no chickens to worry about.

Yeh, Foxes have zero pelt value which is kinda sad so we dont hunt them. Although their #s around here are starting to rise, Which is nice to see.

To the OP, I have no doubt you will see it again if you sit long enough. I know the foxes around here are really vocal. Hear them barking all the time in the dark. If you have a electronic call I bet it would work. Foxes arent necessarily very bright either lol

Yep they get a pass from me any time of the year but as you said, I haven’t chickens to worry about.

oh dude i love foxin, mostly i use car headlights on our home proeprty, this week i have shot 2 red foxes, an 2 other 'vermin' on the 100acres, winters coming alot of animals on the move.
i use my 222, try to do some Whistling from time to time.

have you guys heard of the Button whistle??

Not much pelt value here, there is but minimal buyers, anyway there is a Pest Bounty........ for a Scalp the govt give us $10. F/A but something.
pelts were worth $30 back in the better days.

little round brass disc with a hole in the centre?
i have one here

I hunted and trapped foxes from child up... it has been many years since I have intentionally pursued hunting them. I used a rabbit distress call to get their interest, but got them into shooting position with a mouse squeaker. At the time, my calls were made by Ed Sceery, quality calls with excellent tone. My favourite fox gun was a 77/22 .22 WMR heavy barrel, but changed that up to a 77/22 .22 Hornet due to the number of coyote opportunities I was running into. I still use the Hornet but have switched from W296 to Lil'Gun... I still prefer 50 SP's to the classic 45 SP Hornet bullet.

Copy that.

you got me thinking, i needa get you guys down under for a week or so, deer, trout, fox , you guys would love it truth be known!

Foxes are pretty cool. We used to have one sharing the dish with a hedgehog and a barn cat. I quit shooting foxes at young age. They take care of rodents and pests better than many cats.
Smart buggers they are!
