saturday afternoon Bartell hooked us up with my 16 year olds first brand new iron, stainless remmy SPS in 270wsm DAM BARTELL charged me a whopping 900 bucks for it all with a box of shells, I couldnt beleive it (a rifle under a grand ready to shoot), sunday we sighted it in, figured 4 shots in a 3/8th group 3" high at 100 yards was about good, NOW seeing the kid can read he figured out there is a doe season in region 7a for Jr hunters, DAM BARTELL making me get up and take a kid hunting on my day off, so off we went, drove all over the place and only found other hunters ( we stopped counting trucks after 30) DAM BARTELL and his hunting area are flooded with hunters I thought, so around 10 am we decided to head for breaky and call it a day, heading out of the bush we came over a small hill and could see steam rising in 2 spots ahead of us in a gravel pit, (it was cold out sunday) as we rounded over the hill to my suprise stood 2 moose in the pit, DAM BARTELL has donkeys in his area, the 1st one we bino'd was a big mature bull probably 35-40" wide 5 on 1 side and 7 on the other, to many points to be a imature, the second moose was a cow we thought, then it turned its head
, it had 1 antler, the antler also only had 2 points, making it a LEGAL imature bull in that area, so out with the T3 and fed it a 180gr pill @ about 200 yards, it wondered down the hill with the big bull right behind it, we knew he was toast as he was breathing from his side rather than his mouth but seeing I have never hunted the area and did not know what was down that hill I poped him in the spine and dropped him, we drove up to him ( he was laying right in the ditch) and I bailed out to go look, as I rounded the front of the truck I heard a low toned rumble, as Chris yelled LOOK OUT, that big SOB was heading right at the truck head down and madder than all old hell (you ever wanna see a fat guy run, let me tell you I CAN HAUL A$$ when I have to! ), back in the truck and laid on the horn, the big bull stopped about 25 yards away and walked over to the ditch, at this point feeling safER and now laughing about it I rolled down the window and grunted at him, well yea he came snorting back out of the bush again, at this point Chris explained that he would stuff his new 270 up my you know what if I didnt stop ticking off the local wildlife , so we let him wonder off, 25 minutes later we were on the way to the butcher shop witha mini moose, weighed in at 341 on the scales quartered, so much for NOT working on my day off , thanks to that DAM BARTELL !
