Which caliber for a MARLIN lever rifle?

After a week research, I myself decided to get a Marlin 1895G 45/70 Government. Its affordable and SO Damn powerfull. You can't go wrong with a 45/70. I was going to get a 30-30.

I must say I've never seen the charm of a rifle chambered for a handgun cartridge. First off, if you can do it with a handgun, why carry a rifle? Secondly, if the bulk of your rifle accommodates a rifle cartridge why carry a handgun cartridge? If the rifle you're after is available in a rifle cartridge while being the same weight and bulk as a rifle chambered for a handgun cartridge I would always opt for the rifle cartridge. A .35 Remington trumps a .357 magnum, a .444 trumps a .44 magnum, and a .45/70 trumps a .45 Colt, although according to CC his .454 Puma blurs the line.

To me it's all about the fun factor. I think a lever rifle stuffed full of .38's would be great fun for plinking in the bush or in the gopher field. I don't look at them as a partner to a revolver, rather as a partner to my .22 levergun. ;)

I recommend the .357 if you wish to mate it with a revolver of the same calibre. If your intention is to hunt with a rifle then go with the .30 30. The .357 is suitable for medium game at short ranges, but is not an ideal hunting round. Cowboy action and plinking it is ideal, and cheaper to shoot than a .30 30 because you can use a variety of ammo like .38 special in it.

I have both and I like both. But if you have to pick one, take the 45/70...you can make light loads for it if need be, but you can't make heavy loads for the 30-30.
I would like a .44 mag though.

There are only 2 cartridges that should be chambered in Marlin rifles there is absolutely no need for any others.

1894 = 45 Colt

336/1895 = 45-70
