Ultimate Fox Round?

I used 17 mach2 or 22 mag and 10ga with 2.25 oz #4 birdshot when i hunted foxes. Now i let them live. Not against their hunting just a personal choice.
The 17mach2 at 90 yards lays them down quickly and didnt give an exit. At 40 yards id get exits on broadside shots. With the 22mag i used the lighter 30 to 33gr poly tipped bullets. The 10 ga was used in spring and summer when the tickets were dense and only glimpes of them on creek bottoms were present

Gents how are you today?
rain has finally stopped here... much needed though.

Riiight...... I worked out the .22 Hornet is still in good Go and that the accuracy issue i was having was a rear sight related non issue.... This handles the Young blokes future and a set of rings and a scope will put the Fox in danger..

I do like the .222 so there is fair reason to keep a .222 , im fond of it for sure. not so of the .223 simply due to how common it is, however it makes a great Fox and Roo gun..

Lots to think about between now an the end of the year.

my new torch should arrice this week and il hopefully be able to walk about an geta few more fox this week

hey mate you pipped me at the posting post.

ive had a 22 mag too for a long while, i eventually sold it for a 22 lr---- cost per round an bulk shooting with my Son and family made that a no brainer!

We would and do use 22lr, 22Mag and Shotguns for "whistling" hunts more often than a CF... Down under we find the .22mag is not quite enough in the legs department once the Foxes switch on a bit... its certainly a good fox gun, mild report, light and has its place.. due to this i would over look any Rimfires even the 17hmr..

i once went with some ol timers an there was about 4 jack russels and they flushed the foxes out of tall grass with shotguns.. looked fun but gota know ya mates pretty well

If I was loading and shooting just for fox and wanting to save the fur, I'd be shooting a .22 hornet, .17 hornet or .22 hornet. You need to remember that a fox leather is 1/2 as thin as coyote leather. Light bullets that dont hit really hard would be great.

OP asked
but something reasonable, for foxes at spotlighting distances out to 300m ?
do folks suggesting the .22 Hornet see it as an acceptable choice for 300m? I have never shot a .22 Hornet so wouldnt know.

I dont think many of you guys do much skinning and work on foxes...A 17HMR or 17 Hornet is plenty. Their hides are as thin as rice paper and are actually not much bigger then a big tomcat.

I've skinned well over a hundred foxes (I could not even hazard a guess at an approximate number), both trapped and shot. The problem is the range suggested, not the energy needed to kill the fox. Personally think the .222 is newer perfect for 250 yards, and under 200 yards the Hornet does well. Almost all of the foxes I have shot were with a rather soft load and a 50 SP and were well under 100 yards.

yeah well read Hoyty, the distance is the thing an its by no means extreme.... but it does make a 22mag seem like 3 seconds to get there and we know the ol Fox is a cagey bugger, seldom sits around too long i one place.

to be honest, the 222 is proberly one of the sweet fox cals out !
