Trudeau and Blair BAN 12 Gauge and 10 Gauge SHOTGUNS!

This is fake news and fear mongering. Do liberals dislike guns, yes... did they ban any sort of shotgun, absolutely not. Please get your facts straight and stop the fear mongering. All this does is question the integrity of firearms owners and paints a poor image of us. I assure you the liberals will never come after your hunting shotguns and bolt action rifles...

Just for posterity

It was in BC, the guy is already out of prison. It was the case that cemented no self pinning IIRC. The guy was ordering mags in bulk and pinning them himself and one of him packages was stopped at the border and they decided to make an example of him

I don't remember the guys name, I am sure Rangebob or some one has the case

According to SAAMI :

BORE DIAMETER
1. Rifled barrels: the minor interior diameter of a barrel which is the diameter of a circle formed by the tops of the lands. 2. Shotguns or muskets, the interior dimension of the barrel forward of the chamber but before any restrictive choke or expanded muzzle.

I agree, what it’s saying is you don’t measure the end of a fixed full choke barrel or a barrel with a choke installed to determine diameter. Especially something like a breacher choke.

Barrel diameter is definitely measured as the largest interior diameter.

IMO under the new laws if a 10g shotgun barrel was manufactured with a slight bulge that increased any interior diameter above 20mm it would inherently be prohibited.

If you had an open cylinder heavy walled 12gauge and filed the end until diameter was above 20mm is would become prohibited, why would being threaded for chokes change that?

However I don’t think it was the Gov’t intent to prohibit them.

When was the last time anyone in Canada was killed by someone armed with a 20mm cannon... is this getting stupid or what...are we in the f@cking twilight zone ....they don’t even use 20mm cannons to slaughter each other south of our border....yet

Of course this 20mm rule was designed to prohibit most shotguns....it’s no oversight.

What does the FRT for those guns say right now? Prohibited. If your shotgun is listed as Non-Restricted, its Non-Restricted. Its very simple.

Yes this could change, but for the here and now, it goes by what the FRT says.

As a firearms business I would think that you would be far more worried about what the idiots in parliament have done. In a couple years time at this rate most gun shops won’t be able to keep their doors open. When you have no product to sell maintaining a business is pretty hard. Not trying to be a #### just my thoughts on what is your opinion.

How about after it's formally released that shotguns are not prohibited, we have a live stream of all the naysayers and Literal Linda's eating their respective hats?

just got this from my range.....

to me, notices

VFGPA Members:

1-2 Million Shotguns have been prohibited:

Minister Blair has inadvertently banned almost every modern 12-gauge and 10-gauge shotgun in Canada with removable chokes, because they exceed the maximum bore diameter as defined in the recent Order in Council (Canada Gazette: SOR 2020-96 which stated that any firearm with a bore diameter of 20 mm or greater.

http://canadagazette.gc.ca/rp-pr/p2/2020/2020-05-01-x3/html/sor-dors96-eng.html

A 12-gauge shotgun has a bore of about 18.5 mm, but it the legal opinion of a firearms team - headed by Edward Burlew L.L.B. (one of the foremost experts in Canadian firearms law) this will reclassify to prohibited every modern 12-gauge and 10-gauge shotgun with removable chokes because they exceed the maximum bore diameter of 20 mm where the barrel is threaded to fit the choke. The threading increases the bore diameter at the muzzle to 20.675 mm. If you took such a shotgun to VFGPA to shoot trap since Friday, you committed a crime. Even with the choke installed, it is still a prohibited firearm.

Large Hunting Rifles

In addition, many large bore hunting rifles - some over 100 years old and valued over $100,000 have become prohibited. None of these firearms are semi-automatic or "military style." They encompass common bolt-action rifles such as the .460 Weatherby, break-open single and double rifles. They are “pure” hunting rifles. These firearms are prohibited because the powerful cartridges they shoot - designed to humanely dispatch the largest game animals exceed an arbitrary threshold.

What should I do?

My advise (and it is not legal advice) is to follow the new rules, double lock any of your firearms that have been prohibited by the Order in Council (from a 40 year old 870, to a late model AR-15), and keep it at home until things settle down. Details of a buy back program and/or grandfathering will be coming out in the months ahead. Or the minority government could fall and a smarter government will rescind the Order in Council.

Meanwhile, as this process work through cabinet, we should be able to apply for “grandfathered” prohibition acquisition and possession classifications on our PALs for these firearms. The VFGPA will continue to permit the lawful use of Prohibited firearms on the range including new ones, where permitted. If this becomes the case for your particular firearm (although we don’t know yet if that will be) then you might still have a place to use your firearm. Regardless, watch and wait.

What else can I do? Write or E-Mail Your MP!

(FYI, I have been leading by example, and even have a Zoom call scheduled with our MP Wednesday thanks to Ron)

Subject: No Gun Confiscations

Dear MP,

Thank you for your commitment to our riding.

I am concerned by the government’s mass gun prohibitions and confiscations against federally licensed firearm owners.

I am writing to oppose this unjustified action against honest men and women, and hope you will share my sentiment with your colleagues. This ban can not logically have any effect on protecting Canadians, since these type of firearms are rarely involved in violence.

This ban is just a red herring to divert attention away from the inability of the government to stop murderous criminals.

Thank you for considering my opinion. I would appreciate a response.

Yours sincerely,

What else?

Please vote in every federal election for our friends.

In the meantime, consider supporting some of the other voices advocating for us, like the CSSA or the CCFR

https://cssa-cila.org/

https://firearmrights.ca/en/home/

I am a member of both these organisations. These are the ones best placed for a coordinated legal challenge to the recent firearms prohibition. Indeed, the CSSA broke the news of the shotgun prohibition this morning. I tired to donate additional money to them tonight, and their web site for donations was down due to too many trying to do the same thing. I will do so later this week for both of them. I will also donate to the federal party that I believe is fighting against this stupidity.

Range Safety Officers

On a final note, I met with our Chief RSO David today. We agreed that our RSOs will continue to monitor and enforce safety in the range, but they are neither police, nor firearms experts. They will not be checking if your firearm is a prohibited. That is up to use before we leave the house with our firearms. If you are not sure, please leave it at home.

I understand that many of us are agitated by recent events. At the range, please continue to be the calm, polite members we are and should remain, as we interact with our calm, polite and patient RSOs (who are all member volunteers), as well as each other.

So, weather starting Thursday is looking spectacular. I hope to see you at the range!

Sincerely,

Doug

Misery loves company, I am so glad you shotgun lovers who have always told me at my range etc, that nobody needs an AR15 or handguns. Welcome to the club as I hope you lose them too.. I am so sick of these people never giving 2 s--ts about the rest of the shooting community.. I sign all the petitions etc, so does my RPAL holding wife. The firearms community could only come up with 175,000 signatures on the last petition out of 2.1 Million PAL holders. Out of the 175,000 I am sure 50% were spouse related LOL.. SO I am so glad the rest of the PAL holders just joined the club.. Flame me all you want, many of my Rpal holding friends agree, they just know its not worth making this post. I do not give a s--t no more as I am going to lose MANY thousands of dollars of my gear. Those damn shot guns are just too DANGEROUS !! THEY MUST BE BANNED LOL

Like I said... read my post carefully. Bolt action rifles and shotguns weren’t touched...

A lot of bolt actions were touched and even single shots were touched and yes you can hunt with a 50bmg no regulation says you can not. A lot of videos in North America of people doing just that. And you can hunt with an AR15, AR10 etc. the only thing stopping it is stupid gun laws.

Do we really think the liberals intended to prohibit a 12 gauge shotgun right now? I am not saying they won't come after it one day. They are total jerks. But 12 gauges this early in the game...I'm not buying it. As they say, you eat an elephant one bite at a time. That's too big a bite.
More likely they made a technical error. And I will happily use that against them. I do like that lawyer.

The problem with this technical error is they can not undo it because of c71 - they can not move a prohibited to restricted or non restricted.

It doesn't matter what technical interpretation is used by gun owners. What matters is how the OIC will be enforced. Apparently, according to the RCMP (those doing the enforcing), that means shotguns are indeed included in the ban. Will be interesting to see how the government tries to get around this provision in its own OIC...

I'd rather eat the Vichy Gunowners who gloat about the buggery not being as dry as forecast

The conclusion of an open letter to my gun club, in response to their advising members about prohibited shotguns:

"...Unfortunately 92% of PAL holders weren't interested in signing last year's e-petition or writing to their MP or Senator regarding these imminent measures. And now, as predicted, these measures apply to not just the 120,000 or so of us who own AR-15s and Mini-14s, but nearly every one of Canada's 2.2 million permit holders. Nobody can claim they weren't warned about this.

And to those who couldn't be bothered to support us, I say 'welcome to the club and happy (not) hunting'.

Best wishes..."

I know a lot of you have a (sometimes well-earned) mistrust of the HorseCops. Fair enough.

But the undermanned, underfunded RCMP *do not* want to deal with this OiC fuquery. And the rank and file - many of whom also own suddenly-prohibited gear, same as us - absolutely hate doing firearms confiscations because they are potentially dangerous and always paperwork-heavy.

This hard line enforcement policy may very well be a roundabout way of kicking this back upstairs for a lengthy rewrite.
