Hello,

I used the search before posting and couldn't find anything about this.

I just bought a Sig Mosquito .22lr because I own many Sig pistols and was thinking that being roughly the same size and having all the same pieces in roughly the same area's, that it would be a great warm up gun before the cannons come out.

This is my first .22 (I don't own rifles) and was confronted with an ammunition question from the salesman when I bought the rig. I was offered discount ammunition (a brick) because I had bought the gun there. He had the usual suspects, but he also had some "match-grade" .22 ammunition at about twice the price.

When I asked why it was roughly double the price, he didn't know. So here I am.

Also, as a second question, I've heard a rumor that ALL .22 ammo is sometimes inconsistent in terms of charges. Some apparently feel like magnum rounds while others just make it out of the barrel. Is this true?

Thanks,
Reece

Generally, compared to the skill of the shooter, ammunition is a small factor in shooting a handgun accurately.

The match-grade .22 ammo is for shooting small groups in accurate .22 rifles, and it costs more because it's made more precisely. One other thing to keep in mind is that some match ammo can be considered of standard power, i.e. less powerful than the high velocity .22 ammo. I mention this because some semi-auto .22s need the extra oomph of high velocity ammo to work reasonably reliably.

does your mosquito acctually work properly?

You'll have to try a box of as many brands of ammo as you can to find the ammo your pistol both shoots well and cycles the action. The price of said ammo doesn't matter either. Match or otherwise. .22's are just like that. There's nothing you can do to make a pistol work with all brands either.
Don't buy a brick until you find the ammo your pistol likes. Mind you, having part bricks around will give you a dandy reason to buy a .22 rifle.
Match grade ammo runs at 'standard' velocities using better bullets and is loaded more precisely. That doesn't mean it will work well in your pistol though. You have to try it.
