In this situation yes, What are the production rules in place for???
So that no one can gain an UNFAIR advantage over the rest of the division by tweaking with the gun, which is a great reason for the rules. Take 2 shooters, shooter A has a box stock G17 shooter B has a box stock G22, at arms distance they look identical, they feel identical, they function identicaly. Both shooters are on even ground, there are some advantages to each caliber but just on firearm mechanics they are on even ground. Now shooter B puts in a G17 barrel into a G22, has he/she gained an UNFAIR advantage by doing so????? if so how and why?? or what if shooter B put a G17 top end onto his/her G22 frame, same questions? if you were shooter A would you actualy feel that your at any disadvantage to shooter B?
A point was made that the barrel swap would be illegal because a 9mm barrel is not an option on a G22, this is true, it is also true that an extended mag release and/or slide release is not an option on a G22 either, correct? but they're allowed by the rules.
To just blindly follow rules and regulations just because they are their without factoring in the intent of the rule is bureaucratic BS. We're not supposed to drive any faster then the speed limit, but who doesnt go 1 or 2 or 5 or more over the limit. Is a police officer going to pull you over and write out a ticket for some one doing 2 over the limit because that's the rule no if's,and's or but's?
This isn;t a case of putting in a tungsten or high density steel barrel to tame recoil this is some one wanting to make their gun more afordable to shoot, so that they can play our game. There is nothing nefarious behind this decision, they're not reworking or changing how the gun handles or functions.
If they're choice is either to change out the barrel to afford the massive amount of ammo IPSC consumes inoder to join up or not join at all, then we've made the decison for them by telling them to buy a new gun or screw off.
The market place for replacement guns/parts could be facing a pretty rough time on the horizon, how would you like it if your production gun broke and your options were to fix it with a $100 part that would put you into open or buy a new gun for $1000+ . Or who about the front of your SP01's dust cover cracks and falls off, noting realy critical, just weld it back on and blend everything back in rather then buying a whole new gun right? better make sure when you reblue the gun its identical to the factory colour other wise you got yourself a new Open gun.
Lets look at this situation in Standard Divison,
A couple years ago SVI intorduced their "sight-tracker" model, a modular hi-cap 1911 using an unported Schueman hibred barrel to put more weight up front, lighten the slide and stop the front sight from moving back and forth with the slide. Once SVI met the proper units sold and availabilty time period they were legal in Standard/Limited, But people started to build these guns on STI frames and nothing was said for some reason? STI never made anything like it or offered it in their product line but these prototypes were allowed to compete.
Do we really want to turn away a new IPSC member over this???????????????
