so my mate came up to give me a hand in the Quarry for a few days, one afternoon we knocked off early an went up the road 20 minutes to a property to go for a Hunt to look for a Deer..
my mate is a Truck driver on the highways, but also has a bit of a youtube/faceobok channel on the go an has a fair few followers...good and bad. LOL.

but it was to be his first hunt, ever.

i give him my 222 Sako to use, an said to shoot any deer you see and to hit it 2 inches behind the shoulder should the oppertunity arrise.

i pointed out a rock an log to go an sit behind, there was a kangaroo or two in the clearing he was to watch over an i said to him to stalk into the position an not spook the roo, if you spook the roo the game is over.

he sneaks in after a while , i split off an go stalking my own way. he thinks it s a bit of a 'just sit here an wait' for me moment..
15 minutes later, over where i pointed an mentioned that deer may come out from, he said a bloody deer came walking out an then across, his recount of the hunt was pretty cool, hes not phased to hunt nor kill, but i did say to shoot a deer if it comes out.
mit just come out of the bush an meandered a bit, then came into the clearing an fed for a while toward him, then across, perfect time for a shot he said now the heart rate hat settled a bit after the initial "get phooked" disbelief moment when the deer materialised

broadside, 120-140m 55gr Zmax, one shot, it ran toward him he said about 3 or 4 second and fell over, kicked twice and lay motionless...
he was stoked about this as he wasnt sure how he would go if wounding a deer or the pressure of me if he missed or wounded one LOL.

happy days!!!!!
an meat in the freezer!

lol bruh, it didnt appear to work the initial time on my screen, so i copy, paste and refreshed, didnt see it in the forum so made a new thread.

offended much ?

When they snoop around musty moldy old homes they get kinda funny in the head WhelanLag cut 'im a little slack mate ;)
Great Story and congrats to you and your mate with the zmax Sako !!

What kind of deer do you have there and how much do they weigh? They look shorter but fatter than the local whitetail here. I have to confess when I read "55gr Z-MAX" I was a bit concerned how the story was going to unfold... glad it worked out. (If you aren't aware, Hornady Z-MAX are a green tipped V-MAX... rapid expanding varmint bullets) Anyway, it's always exciting to see a new hunter cut their teeth... especially with such efficient conclusions.

Once the lead gets past the hide and The ribs she can expand all ahe wants.lol

hey mate- its a Fallow Deer, (Dama Dama) , its a young Buck an is currently in good condition, een at this young age the Bucks are larger than a Mature Doe.

this deer was maybe 45-50kg with the guts in.. fairly small, thin skinned game, a 223-22.250- is perfect and the 243 Blows fairly big holes in em.. majority are shot with big game guns like yer 270s up 308 an 06s etc.. as most hunters use these big guns for the Sambar deer (elk like) .

yeah na understood what the projectle is, alway good to create a bit of controversy ey :)

my newbie mate handled the situation awesomely... from the buck fever, to waiting for a few minutes to lower heart rate and then proceed to place a shot precisely 2inches back an half way up from the front leg, as instructed an hour previous lol.

i think this is a fair call but in the hands of a experienced hunter/shooter, any front leg involvment an its game over for the hunter an a ruined day!

ribs for days, lungs for days, meat for days

Those fallow deer are about a third the size of a whitetail so a 222 is probably a wise choice. I've never hunted game in that weight category but it explains the existence of the 22 Savage Hi-power: the .228" bullets were intended for this size game animal... not intended primarily for thrashing varmints as most .224" bullets here are. But yes, avoid the strong shoulder bones and they certainly work even for larger beasts.

I have taken a couple mule deer with a .223, and been involved with a couple other folks harvesting theirs with same. None of us was using anything special for bullets.

Doesn't matter how big the gun, if you don't hit them.
Fwiw, I usually tell them to look for the point of the elbow, and go up around the midpoint height wise.

On the last doe I got, I recovered somewhere around 36 or so grains of bullet parts, from a 50 grain spire point, lodged up against the inside of the far side fore leg. The internals were a tad, uh, soupy... Biological jigsaw puzzle, that I did not bother to save, actually... :)

5.6x50 is just a bit ahead of .222 / .223 and frankly I’d use it on anything below elk in BC without a worry. I’d definitely choose it far and away before a .44 Mag carbine for instance.

The more game I see shot the more I have had to accept placement, speed, and quality of the bullet in that order are the most important factors.

Never had an issue with the .222 on WT's 24gr/Win 748/Hornady old style 55gr with cannlure/mag primer. One per customer including 3 black bears.
