Deer Hunting with Mossberg Shockwave and Remington Low Recoil 00 Buckshot

Published to YouTube on Jan 1, 2018 by Brobee223

Have you ever wondered about the effectiveness of 12 gauge low recoil 00 buckshot? Then I invite you to come check out my 2017 hunting season where I use my "baby alligator!", the nickname I've given my pistol-grip-only mossberg 500 firing low recoil 00 buckshot.

After seeing Brobee’s fantastic videos, I finally built myself a Tac-14 two years ago … and in the last two years I was able to shoot it quite a bit.

My Tac-14 build with a bead on a pedestal shoots to point of aim … and when I shoot buckshot or bird shot.

However, one day and for fun …. I shot a couple of low recoil slugs out of it … and to my big surprise I was able to shoot “acceptable” groups with that setup. However, the groups were around 6” – 8” to the right to where I was aiming …

I had to compensate the sight picture a tiny tiny bit … ( and I guess that is my particular barrel ) … and to group slugs into an 8” circle at 50 meters.

Here is the sight picture ….

And here are the groups at 50 meters ….

Voila, my experience so far ….

Also, I wanted my Tac-14 to be my general woods bumming and canoeing gun. It's compactness is just great for these sort of activities. But in order to meet my needs in this role … I need my gun to be suitable for predator protection as well.

So, I went on a quest to find “low recoil” or lower recoil slugs that have the ability to penetrate. And, I did some penetration tests … and so far I am happy. I found two slugs that I can still control and shoot in my Tac-14 and which show acceptable penetration.

1.) Federal Deep Penetrator, 1oz slug: 1350 FPS
2.) Winchester BRI Sabot, 1oz slug: 1350 FPS

Here the link to the penetration test:

p.s.: If I shoot a full power slugs in my Tac-14 ... lets say a 1oz slug in the range of 1600 FPS to 1700 FPS ... my Tac-14 will hit me in the face ... recoil out of my hands ... and land in the dirt in front of my feet ... So much for a quick follow up shot ... lol ...

Not a true pistol grip but sorta like one.

I carried this in the bush and in camp for work for many years. Small, easy to transport in planes and choppers.

The Choate top folder is ugly as sin but it is very high quality, locks up tight and shoots well. And Choate stands behind their products, they are an excellent company to buy from.

Tell me another story, Uncle Geologist?

*sits down by the fireplace*

I carried my canuck regulator turkey hunting several times this season. Havent fired it at any thunder chickens but it is nice to carry it in a scabbard on my hip. With the turkey choke in it it patterns extremely tight. I think it may become my sidearm for berry picking in bear country

The recoil strap for the birds head he markets does an amazing job.
As he doesn’t ship to Canada I made one myself with webbing from Amazon.

I picked up the JIC Shockwave a couple of weeks ago. It runs a bit more than the other models but has an attractive ceracoated finish, plus it's easier to find in stock. It also comes with a bright orange storage tube, too. I had it out to the range for the first time today—I didn't have any low-recoil ammo at home, so 00 Buckshot was my ammo of choice. The recoil (and muzzle flash!) was certainly noticeable but not unmanageable, although I was wearing my shooting gloves. I did find the bolt holding the front strap to the fore-end hit my index finger once or twice, so I'll have to focus on moving my hand further back on the fore-end...or maybe add a Magpul fore-end. The strap didn't bug me as much as I thought it might...I didn't even notice it.

I found it pointed a little high for the first five rounds so I corrected a bit for the next five (distance was 5m).

It looks a little awkward to me, OK if you have time to wiggle your hand in, though I haven't tried it. I was surprised that my Canuck regulator was fairly easy to shoot, and very light and handy.

I like that the stock looks like it has a buttpad that isn't bare metal... :yingyang:

I find it pretty quick if you leave it a little loose
I’m also using a TLR7 on a magpul forend stuck in the web of my hand to control the front end too.
Combining the front and back control really change the whole dynamic of using these weapons.

It's hard rubber with a steel core. On mine the old steel core broke and it made shooting it painful.

I called Choate in the US and they asked me for a photo so they would know exactly which model it was. They emailed me back and said that they had the replacement pad and just needed my address. When I asked them how to pay for it, they said, NO CHARGE.

FREE...............

A true, no BS lifetime guarantee on a 20 year old stock to the second or 3rd owner.

Choate is tops in customer support.

Thanks diananike, ...

One problem I had, was that my wood grip was toooooo slippery ... and under recoil the trigger guard would hit my middle finger ... and that did hurt ... The gun was not a pleasure to shoot!

So, I installed a sling stud and a sling swivel to the end of my wood grip ... and made myself a three finger loop.
And in addition I added a piece of bicycle tubing over the grip ....

I can now shoot my Tac-14 with that three finger sling/loop ... or without it if needed (and then that sling/loop just dangles behind my hand) ....

But the three finger loop really helps to control "heavier" loads ...

Works for me so far! I am happy!

That’s nice !

I got a new “baby alligator” this spring!

Here’s a video I made that shows how I’ve started working on getting practiced up as well as using it for a somewhat unique pest problem we encountered:

Geologist: I LOVE your old school mossberg setup!

0faustus0: I am go to try the rubber grip. Nice marine mag!

master-g : your two-tone shockwave looks awesome. I found that gluing on an xs sight systems big dot bead solved a similar elevation issue I experience with my shockwave.

Bryben: need pics!

scout3006 + diananike + 870P: I wish I could find some #1 buckshot, I would love to take it on a deer hunt!

A couple comments from me on the Remington 870 platform.

I used to hunt with one, and found that the way I held the shotgun, and the placing of my hand on the pump 'occasionally' knocked a spent casing I was trying to eject, back into the action and jamming it. I think just the tip of my middle finger was responsible & this only happened when the shooting was fast & heavy over the dogs as I had no time to think about where my hand was. It was very instinctive snap shooting usually in thick cover.

I mention this because I really like the Magpul pump on the Tac-14. It would ensure my fingers are nowhere near the ejection port to tap a spent casing into the action to jam it. The old style of pump, which Brobee replaced his Magpul with in this video, would potentially cause me issues.

That being said, ain't no way I'm gonna beat him at clays! Brobee can shoot!

Cheers
Jay
P.S. Seeing as how the Modified tube on the build was better at further distances, anyone thought of having their Tac-14 threaded for tubes?
