Dirty cylinder

I have a .357 revolver that I shoot mostly .38 cast SWC out of. I normally clean it pretty good after each outing but over the years it seems that the cylinder flutes or finger groves or whatever you call them have built up with a grey film. I am not sure if this is burn't powder or lead and it doesn't seem to want to come off. I have applied Hoppes#9 liberally and let it soak with a wet patch but it just doesn't seem to want to come off. Any suggestions?

Yes I do not want to scrub too hard with anything or I might damage the bluing

Try Flitz bore cleaner and those kitchen scrub pads. I found the Flitz to be one of the better cleaning products I've used so far, does a great job on my stainless GP100.

Don't use a ScotchBrite pad on a blued gun. It will scratch and/or remove the blueing. And don't rub too hard with whatever you use.

They make a white one that has no grit what ever, the gray are super fine, and I have used one on a poor blue gun, with out a problem, with G96 or WD40
You do not want to use it dry, I have also used 0000 steel wool and oil, in the fluts, stay away from the share corners.
I was digging in the back of the cabinet and found a bottle of Otis 012-C carbon remover I did not know I had.
Will run out to the range and mess up my 19 and 14, and let you know how it works.
I do know that if that stuff is left on for yrs, good luck
The thing is as Pete said, a light touch, and it comes of easy if done soon.

Pro Shot Lead Clean Cloth(silver mylar bag for BLUED guns)works slightly better than Flitz Metal Polish(paste).
