I typically like to use semi autos for hunting. But with recent changes who knows how long that will last. I use a 3006 benelli r1 which is great. But I recently came into possession of a bunch of 308 rounds (a friend's rifle was banned and he needed money so I bought the ammo he can't presently use). Any recommendations for a 308 bolt action rifle?

For a hunting rig, Howa/Vanguard are very well built, better then anything else in that price range, little heavy though.
Could always go used too, Tradex has lots of good deals on used guns

There is only one new bolt action on the market that I have any interest in and that’s the M70 EW.
HS Precision or Legendary Arms ...yes but not usual off the shelf rifles
M70 for the price.

x2 on the Howa/Weatherby Vanguard

Your friend was a little quick to unload all of his ammo...

As for bolt action rifles, everyone will pimp their favourite pet... but in all honesty just go into a local gunshop and start shouldering and cycling some rifles, find the one that fits right and feels right, whatever brand and model that might be is immaterial. After some time, you will develop an affinity for (and confidence in), a particular brand/model, and then you can come back to CGN and tell others that are seeking a bolt action rifle how that choice is the perfect one to make.

thanks for the morning laugh.

Exactly what Hoytcanon said, except make sure it’s a Browning X bolt!

Seriously though, like he said, go try a bunch. Have the stores mount some scopes, get a feel for good cheek weld and scope to eye alignment. You will find all the different brands fit differently. I really like palm swells (I have big hands) and tang safeties. Go find what you like.

Happy hunting!

That is exactly how it works, well said.... thinking back, ive done that a few times in lots of subjects in life lol.

How big is your budget?

My experience is fairly limited compared to many, but I really like my Sako Black Bear. Of course I didn’t know that until I held it and used it for awhile. Before that I thought my Model 7 was great. Recently had a similar experience with a Barrett Fieldcraft and am now considering a change.

Try as many as you can. Pick the one that feels most natural. If it doesn’t feel good/fit well in the shop it won’t get any better in the field.

T/C Venture is a great firearm, you are a few days late asking or I could've offered you mine.
