We are on 5 acres, fenced and gated. 1/3 of the property is treed bush.

The adjacent neighbor has spotted an adult cougar on their lawn. Our 10 year old male German Shepherd has been showing fear for no reason in the house.

We are far out of town and firearms discharge is legal and so is hunting. None of the areas where we walk are visible to our neighbors.

I have the following guns that I think are suitable and reliable in case I have to get the cougar off my dogs on the basis of reliability, cartridge suitability, lower power due to neighbors, light weight and flashlight capable for night use.

HP9-1, 12 ga pump with Wilson tritium sights and a Surefire forend light.

Beretta A300 12 ga semi auto.

Henry 12.5", .357 magnum lever action carbine with full stock.

IMI Tomberwolf pump .357 mag.

Steyr Mannlicher Schnauer 1903 carbine 6.5 x 54 MS carbine.

I don't intend to shoot it unless I have to. I will use a crack flare to haze it if I see it.

I think during the day the Timberwolf would be best and at night the HP9-1 with a full choke and OO buck.

Depending on the time you will be walking the dog etc on the property I would have the 12ga with the light for dusk and the semi for during daytime
Slugs I would imagine would do the trick nicely.

If as you say trying to get it off your dogs I sure wouldn't be shooting at it with a shotgun or any gun unless your willing to be right beside it putting
the barrel against it so as not to hit your dog. Its quit possible your getting worried for nothing.

I've shot them with 30-30 (170 grain) and 44 magnum (240 grain) and they were dead before they hit the ground...... of course that's shooting them treed at maybe 25 yards. Proper shot placement did the trick.
I shot a treed bobcat one time, about the same distance, with a 20" barrel 12 guage loaded with buckshot, and even though it killed it, I was not impressed as only 3 of the balls hit the bobcat. It was far in the bush, away from anybody, but six of the balls didn't make contact......
If it were me, and I had to choose from your guns, I would use the 6.5x54. You mention "lower power due to neighbors". If you mean you are worried about the bullet travelling too far, then obviously do not take the shot.
I've heard of people shooting them with 357 magnums, and that seems to work too.

Depends on the firearms restrictions in your area best call your CO let them make the call . If all fails silent but deadly crossbow then a shovel ! Thats what happens in my neck of the woods if a animal becomes a problem.
