A newbie question, but I would really like to know the answer(s)
With a rifle, the correct method is to squeeze the trigger.
With a shotgun, I've been told that you pull the trigger.
I understand the difference, but don't understand the why of it.
A bit of informed teaching is requested
Many thanks
Hugh.

I always thought you just kind of tap the trigger with a shotgun at least that's what I do one quick motion and bang works for me. when shooting slugs, buck or turkey loads I squeeze like a rifle but most shotguns have a quick trigger break.

Welcome to CGN. A rifle is generally aimed at a stationary target, and squeezing the trigger reduces the movement of the gun that would change the point of impact. A shotgun is generally aimed at a moving target, and the timing of the shot, usually by a brisk pulling of the trigger, is most important.

When I’m shooting at an animal the last thing I’m aware of is my trigger pull, muscle memory and repetition takes over but in general it’s less of a squeeze with a shotgun and more of a deliberate pull it that makes any sense lol.

Thanks Pinfire, makes sense.

Slap...squeeze...pull...tap....who the hell knows. When a woodcock flushes from under your foot, or a group of teal buzz past you at 60mph at first light....who has time to think or remember what the finger does. I keep my eyes on the target, do my best to swing through and just let my instincts do the rest

Yeah, well I have to admit there was not much squeezing at 120 knots hanging out the chopper door with an M-60....... but that was 51 years ago

I wanted to know the reason for squeezing vs pulling for rifle/shotgun. I think Pinfire answered the question reasonably well. If there are any other reasons, please let me know.
Thanks

I was watching Wakeman videos on line and he was always mentioning trigger pull and weight. This got me thinking that I had never noticed any trigger difference in any of the dozens I have owned over the years. Upon conscious observation, not only do I pull the triggers, I use a different part of my finger. I fire a rifle off the tip of my finger and like a light squeeze, crisp break and no creep. I fire a shotgun one joint in and often move my entire hand when I pull. This has to be from shooting double triggers but I do it sometimes even with a single trigger. It is absolutely the opposite of any decent forum one should use with a rifle.
