Cougar on acreage, what gun?

My father mentioned a situation with panthers (leopards) when he was in Pakistan in the ‘50’s. The owner of the country home he was staying at kept a pair of Airdale’s who were apparently very effective keeping panthers away from the property. The owner had only one dog originally which disappeared ‘mysteriously’ (presumably a big cat) but after he acquired the pair of Airdales they seemed to have each others ‘six’ and there were no more problems.

If he isn’t gone and you are attempting to be less lethal I haven’t met one critter who came back after an ass full of rock salt from the 12 g. Worked on more than one bear in the past.

If they come back, the next one won’t dissolve on contact.

Tended to a few feral tom's in my time...hope that a cats survive-ability isn't proportionate to their size. Cats are pretty tough IMO...seen an 8lb Tom absorb a 22 lr and head for parts unknown on a couple occasions.

Cougars, like all cats , have a highly developed central nervous system. They are one animal where a fast bullet from a rifle will drop them in their tracks if you get a solid hit anywhere on the body. On the other hand low velocity rounds like buckshot, handgun rounds, etc. can be less than marvelous unless you get a direct brain hit or are very close to them.

If you want to try a non-lethal method to get rid of it, 12g bear bangers or bear deterrent (plastic shot). With 00 or 000 right behind on standby just incase its needed.

I prefer to not fire non lethals from my primary long gun in case things go sideways with the crackflare.

Better to have a separate launcher. I have a centerfire Truflare pen launcher with bear bangers and I can also fire them in this.

Can you bait a cougar? Maybe open a cold one on the back deck or light up a de maureier light? Maybe play some disco?

Beretta semi with something between #4 shot and double odd buck shot 2 3/4" no plug. In Alberta you need to have some kind of livestock on your property to get away clean with dropping a cougar on your property legally. Dogs and children are not on the "Trigger Time" list for a righteous kill. A friend of mine killed one with his bow on his father's farm site with his bow a few years back. The cat was wearing a collar and the game wardens were on site within 1 hour after it had fallen. There were no charges because there were horses on the property at the time. They took the cat and that was that.
