Anyone running the Savage 110 Elite Precision?

This has just caught my eye so I guess its new to market?

I like 223 and have a ton of components so something like this makes sense. I kinda wish I had picked up an RPR in 5.56 but missed out.

Any accuracy reports out there?
 
I don't have one, but the Savage long range series rifles have a good reputation for accuracy. I haven't seen one of them that wouldn't beat 1moa and they often do much better. Coupled with a chassis that also has a good reputation and I don't see how it could possibly go wrong.

The only downsides are the usual Savage downsides: bolt lift on the heavier side, not the smoothest bolt to run, etc. The factory blueprinting and titanium nitride bolt have been reported to help with those things, but not put them in the same league as custom actions.

Which has got me thinking, I know it would be more expensive but what custom actions could be used to build a similar rifle?

Pretty sure that is a MDT chassis so with a custom action and quality barrel you could end up with a nice rifle. Definitely more cost effective to simply buy the Savage though I imagine.

How about a bighorn origin. Triggertech trigger. ACC Chassis.

My next rifle build will be with an origin. Change barrels at home. Rem 700 footprint.

Interesting, so what calibre are you thinking of? 223? Or something more exotic?

I saw a 22 Creedmoor recently and that thing was crazy accurate. I'm guessing barrel life may be short though.

Forgive my ignorance but why is it possible to change the barrels at home on a Rem 700 footprint? I'm assuming it isn't on other comparable actions?

I've never done it but I imagined it would simply take some wrenches (maybe specialized wrenches like AR type) and go /no go gauges?
 
I've had an itch for an accurate 223 for a while but when I look at the component costs its not that much cheaper than my 6.5CM.

Decent bullets cost around the same, primers are the same, powder is less (around half) and I would probably get more life from the brass.

How is the barrel life on a 223?

There is a savage prefit in 223 with a 1:7 on the EE. Might be worth looking at. Could snag a savage 10 or something and gut all the parts, keep what you need, and atleast play around with some heavy 223 stuff until someone gets origins in stock again.

My next build will be a 6mm BR I think. 6 and 22 creed look pretty fun as well.

I'm not an expert on the topic of shouldered barrels and all that, but the origin action is threaded for savage prefits so you can just change them at home. Seems most actions are based on the Remington 700 footprint. I prefer the 700 footprint and trigger options over savage.

I just put together my first gun and it's quite easy. With having never done it I got it headspaced and torqued in 30 minutes

The Ultimatum Deadline is something I've been considering getting. They're made quite close to you, lower mainland I believe. Remington 700 footprint and Savage prefit barrels. Custom action manufacturers use the remington 700 footprint for compatibility with all the aftermarket stocks and triggers - lots of options for your build. The Savage prefit choice is for access to lots of barrels that can be easily swapped at home. It limits them a little bit in what they can design, but even if they produced a much better action on a proprietary footprint there would be no stocks/chassis for it and it would be kind of useless.

It's definitely an MDT chassis. And yes, the Savage package is great value. The chassis and a custom action would cost you more than the package and you still wouldn't have a barrel or a trigger.

Very true. I've heard it depends on the chassis, but MDT is one of the chassis manufacturers that requires a bit of filing to accommodate the trigger hanger. I've heard the mag latch needs to be filed a bit shorter to accommodate the larger bolt as well.

They do have an inlet specific to the Ultimatum Deadline that addresses these things, but it's not available on everything and I don't think they offer it in left hand yet (although I may be the only one that cares about that)
 
Seems like a pretty good buy. Except I had a 10 Stealth Evolution which at the time was one of their top of the line rifles. The barrel at the crown had very deep chatter marks and there what appeared to be a crack in one of the grooves just past the throat. Needless to say I returned it for warranty. Waited for 1 year before they sent me a new one which I sold right away.
 
You could grab the ACC on the EE for $975. The 1:7 twist barrel for $600. Grab a savage short action rifle and strip all parts and sell off the barrel, stock, mag. Add a rifle basix trigger too if you wanted. You could end up close to the $2k mark for the same outcome with some personal touches along the way....

Thats kinda worrying.

Hearing such things makes me cagey, as time wears on I value quality firearms more and more. I'm the type that keeps things a long time (so long as I like them and they do what they say on the tin) so it makes sense to get something decent.

Might be better for me to do a build. That way I get what I want and ensure I get quality parts. Probably will be pricey though. Will dwell on this for a while and keep shooting my 6.5CM in the meantime.

Anyone know what kind of barrel life a guy can expect out of a 223?

You get what you pay for. Savage products are cheap for a reason. Shoddy manufacturing with poor QA/QC, the money savings have to come from somewhere, and Savage isn't running a charity.

.223 barrel life is pretty generous. There's multiple factors involved with barrel life, how hot your loads are, how you treat the barrel, accuracy expectations, etc. But a very conservative figure is probably 3,000+ rounds.

I have several Savage rifles and I’ve only had 1 disappointment.
That was a 10TR when they first came out.
It would shoot 30” left at 25y.
It was sent out for warranty and sent back better but nowhere near good enough.
After contacting Savage it was replaced and shoots sub MOA.

Just before Christmas I was at Cabela’s in Ottawa where I saw a 12FV in 6.5 Creedmoor for $549.00
I had already ordered an MDT LSS-XL on Black Friday.
I was out with the 6.5 yesterday to start load development.
These were the first 25 shots using 140gr ELD-M and H4350 all are 3 shots going up .4 grains at a time.
For that kind of price the performance is incredible.
