How many hunt deer with open sights?

If you push bluff on the prairies, the deer don't walk out of the bush and stand at the edge. Sometimes pushing bush is the only action to be found, so running deer are common shots. That guy's comment is pure ignorance.
 
Heck ya! Thanks to Andy Pridham's coaching and help finding one, I am going to tote this Vetterli Sporter to the back field this fall! With no monkeying around at all she is shooting 1 1/2" groups at 100 yards, right on the bullseye
with a six o'clock hold on an 8" target.
Any buck that steps within 150yds of this 310gr cast boolit is in for a big suprise. :cool:

Do you shoot flying ducks, or wait till they walk up to you? What about grouse?

Dewd, you're 20yrs old. How did you learn so much, so fast? :confused: A scope gives an optical advantage in magnification and brightness. At close range, compared to a good peep sight, it's NOT faster and it's NOT handier.

There's nothing faster than a peep sight at close range. It's perfect for running deer.

cool, i assume you converted it to CF? i am tempted to try to pop a deer with an 1876 vintage Kar71.

I was very fortunate to get ahold of an already converted piece.:cool:
Just make brass, add a primer, stir in SR4759 and a boolit and go!;)

To say I am excited to use it hunting is an understatement!

You best take out that 1876, let temptation get the better of you!
 
Man, those Vetterli's are butt ugly.......iron sights belong on rifles, nice rifles, i use iron sights on all my hunting rifles, some peeps, some buckhorn, one scoped with an antique scope. I use some modern guns with scopes for testing cast bullets for accuracy, but not for anything serious. One might want to scope that Vetterli, just do something with it!

Jeepers Ben between my metrics and now my Vetterli I can't do anything to make you happy!:pirate:

I THOUGHT they were ugly at first too but this one has grown on me, especially in the fact that it shoots so well.

Hopefully some day I can live up to your expectations, but don't hold your breath.;)
 
I have shot two deer with my M14 using open sights, and one with my shotgun... But, I must say, I do prefer a scope... Must be that I am getting old...

And to think I actually wasted time to answer one of your very few threads a short while ago on a hunting rifle you were looking to buy ....but then again, I actually come to this great site to learn and also hopefully pass on some of my own knowledge to others here, and since I have been hunting deer for more years than you have been alive I think it would be accurate to say you might actually learn something from me and many others here if you would keep your childish remarks to yourself.
Your time would best be spent learning more about deer hunting, a subject you obviously know little about, before making ignorant statements and trying to insult me.

What model of Nikon do you have? I've been comparing the FullField II with the Monarch and the Buckmaster. Looking at 3x9 or 3.5x10. I tried to search on the Nikon web site for local dealers if Waranty issues needed to be addressed, but couldn't find a dealer on their web site in SW Ontario.

I own many rifles and have sold/traded many rifles over the years with irons on them, both peep and open.
Some were verniers, some receivers, some flip ups.
My latest is a 9.3X74R Tikka 412S with a NECG peep as well as open sights.

I may get a shot at a running deer with it this year, but then I've only been doing this stuff for about 42 years.
All the running deer, moose and bears I shot with my 30.30, .58 Hawken, 303 Brit, 8mm Mannlicher Schoenauer, and 30'06's must have been lucky shots.
I promise to use only a scoped rifle and take nothing but standing shots at 100 yards or less from now on - NOT!!:evil:

By your statement I am lead to believe that many here have passed up more deer in one season than you Sir have seen in your LIFETIME!
