Hello. My wife and I have a moose hunt booked for Sept. 2020, in the Yukon. We are Ontario residents. If non essential travel to the Yukon does not open up, our hunt will be cancelled.

We are looking for a backup plan in Ontario. As there are (presumably) a fair amount of U.S. residents who book in Ontario who may have a similar predicament as us, we are turning to Ontario as a backup.

My questions:

Any recommendations for Moose Outfitters in Ontario? We can get our own Bull tag for: WMU 1a and 1d guaranteed, and 1C is a maybe.

Just seeing if this is a feasible backup plan.

The backup backup plan is self guided in 1A or 1D but we have 0 local knowledge of the areas. We do have access to aircraft and logistical support (if some adventurers with local knowledge want to join us for a self guided, that is also possible).

Not many outfitters are going to jump on your scenario as it leaves very little margin for any profit. Your best bet is to team up with a local moose hunter. Go to the Facebook group "Ontario Moose Hunters" and post an invitation. I guide for two Northern Ontario lodges, but we are fully booked, pending potential US border closures... it is possible we may have one hunt available if the border remains closed... our hunts come with supplies tags... mostly fully guided, American plan out of the main lodge... terrific walleye fishing and great food. There is a possibility of a DIY hunt from one of the fly-in outpost camps. All hunts are in prime, BIG bull habitat. PM if interested... these are NOT WMU 1 hunts though.

Are you just looking for outfitters in those WMU's?

On the radio they said the MB/ON border was stopping non-essential border traffic from ON to MB and that all others must provide a quarantine plan, which I had in place, but when I got to the border there was only a sign saying to quarantine for 14 days but no stop or check.

Money making mentioned in first written sentence. No more regard for the hunt. It is profit for that kind! True hunters take note! That is where they want us to be?
 
Been out rifle shooting today and this is what will be happening around here:

" Hunters are asked to apply for LEH hunting areas close to home.

..... these restrictions are in place to protect the health and safety of British Columbians.

In short, go Mountain Hunting in your Province.
 
Showwalters in red lake is a good choice went moosehunting with them 2 years ago found them to be very good have nothing g bad to say give them a call they may be trying g to fill spots that were with Americans

You would not be in business very long if you did not consider the financial side of it... make no mistake, outfitters do it for love of the outdoors, not money... you are never going to get rich outfitting and it is a ton of work and sacrifice... but you have children to feed and employees to pay, and equipment to buy and facilities to upgrade... if money was the motivation you would be better off staying home and flipping burgers at McDonald's.

Applying BC methods for Ontario? it's a bit different . Outfiitter tags gone down more than 80%

So are individual tags and big problem is availability of MOOSE itself. Looking to move to new hunting grounds.

I don't live far inside Ont from the Man border and at this present time, yesterday, no one is being stopped in either direction. If they are now I won't be seeing my wife I guess for a while as she left for Winnipeg yesterday on a Costco run and other supplies. She has the small motor home and is due home any minute. Haven't heard anything to the contrary. I swear half of Man is over here fishing every weekend as per usual. Seen many Manitoba plates when I was intown getting fuel today.

You got this right. One of best friends ran a very successful camp and outfitting business here for 27 yrs. he enjoyed it as he loved the outdoors. But it was a tremendous amount of work, and you had to be able to multi task at level 10 and smile all the while. You are the last one to bed at night and the first one up in the morning. You had to have a keen business sense or you simply would not survive. He sold the business due to age and health issues.
 
Last year we looked into the same wmu fly in scenarios due to the 100% tag guarantee. Add to that the price of a native guide, flights in and out plus the seperate flight out for the moose, it was getting pricey. Normal outfitter usually charges around $1000 for an adult tag. Check out Lower Twin Lakes Lodge in Nakina. Cottage 7 nights, and adult tag was like $2750 for 2 ppl, extra person was $375. Excellent fishing, and lots of birds. We stayed at the campground.

you do not know what is happening. for the 1st of july seems even non essential travelling will be allowed between BC and YT. we had late checkpoints at every border but so far on all the travellers only less than 20 has been sent back to where they belong.

what your yukon outfitter is telling you? i do hope you are using a local one otherwise they cannot help you that much ...

The outfitter in the Yukon does not know to be honest. They can guess and hope but it is really out of their control.

We are just setting up a backup plan for Ontario in the event that we cannot enter the Yukon legally. Right now, non-essential travel into the Yukon is prohibited. That "should" change, but could change back.

We had a Canoe trip booked in the NWT in late August. That was cancelled as it is in a National Park. The park said they are not issuing permits as it is not part of their re-opening plan.

The hunt is not of course in a National Park in the Yukon.

I'd rather not name the outfitter at this point. They are good people like almost all of the outfitters there.
