Why are AR triggers so darn expensive...

... and why is there such a price gap between stock mil-spec and aftermarket?

Like seriously, you can get a regular mil-spec trigger for like $70, and then other than Hiperfire in the $160, they go up to like $260 at the absolute cheapest, and up and up and up.

What am I missing? Is there really no space between $100 and $300 for a decent selection of triggers?

Supply and Demand

Lots of competitors have figured out that the best piece of equipment besides large quantities of ammo and practice in order to perform better is a nice trigger.

This is not a waste of money IMHO and simply is the best upgrade to have on any rifle (or pistol for that matter) and lots of competitor types know that.

ARs don't usually come with great triggers - good enough for military applications but generally lacking for competitive use.

I'm not aware of anyone who's bought and used a $200+ trigger and regretted it. The difference in quality and customizability, even, is totally worth it.

Use to be able to get the RRA 2 stage for around $100.

I got one from Brownells a few years ago for my shorty, it’s pretty darn good especially for the price point. It’s not as good as my Geiselle NM, but it wasn’t $300 either.

Still available for $92 USD if a 2 stage is within your choices.

Anderson stainless trigger group with ss. Another $20 gets you a ss Anderson hammer and ss hammer spring. I find stainless triggers break cleaner and crisper than blued ones.

Probably due to smoother parts. The bluing might cause inconsistencies so this makes sense.

Buy Once, Cry Once.

Want cheap? Get a milspec trigger

Want good? Get a $250 Triggertech Combat AR trigger

Want best? Spend $300+ on a Triggertech Diamond AR

The higher price reflects the human labour cost and finish time. A milspec trigger has little time spent on polishing and precision finishing. A high end trigger has more time put into smoothing and polishing that makes it operate cleaner. Rust resistant coatings.

Its like comparing a timex to a swiss watch. The both function the same, but the attention to detail and the finishes and materials are higher end.

Of course volume production has a lot to do with it, if there were more people buying such triggers, the manufacturers per unit costs could be driven down.

Probably for the same reasons an Audi costs more then a Yugo.

You are paying for better raw materials, better manufacturing processes, R&D, QA/QC, customer service, collective experience among the staff etc.

It's like anything else in this world, but this seems to be a hard concept for some in the Canadian firearm community. Some people in the precision rifle sections have a hard time understanding why a custom rifle is worth so much more then a Savage, and because they don't want to pay the price they pretend a Savage is every bit as good.

It's simple business and economics principles. If you want a high quality trigger, it's going to cost a lot more then a high volume mass produced mil-spec one due to the reasons listed above. But those reasons listed above is why a high quality trigger also feels and functions on a higher degree then the run of the mill mil-spec one.
