I've a M38 that I'd like to either scope or put better sights on.
I'm thinking of a diopter set up but a scope could be in the cards as well.
Any ideas,other options?

Thanks in advance.

If you want a small ring sporter there are lots in the EE. Grab one of those.

If you learn to use the sights on your swede you'll come to love them, they are as accurate as you are guaranteed. Get a load worked up that is regulated to the sights and have fun shooting 400M-600M pumpkins!

You can get a non-gunsmithing scope mount that goes in place of your rear sight. Then use a long eye relief scope or a red dot. Works really well and you don't have to drill and tap.

See if you can find a drop in "Västerås Metallverken" Type 1 civilian micrometer rear sight. You often see them on eBay...

Example of a "Västerås Metallverken" Type II rear sight for m/96 rifle ONLY.

m/38's and m/96-38's as converted by Carl Gustafs Stads Gevarsfaktori 1938-1940, used the sight below marked "T", which was built for the m/41 Torped bullet.

I have a M38 CG, receiver dated 1917. So this rifle was retrofitted to the M38configuration, but still retains the straight bolt handle, this to me is not uncommon but like Badger Dog says they changed the rear sight to accommodate the ballistics of the m41 cartridge. But strangely my m38 still has the old M96 rear sight. I wonder how that happened, I mean they cut the barrel down to m38 length but left the old sight. Actually I may have just answered my own question. Sometimes they left the old sight and put a range plate on the butt.. No range plate but the stock was refinished. So maybe it went missing.

One thing for sure though, this particular rifle (my 3rd Swede) is a SHOOTER..

Mine has a bubba'd stock but they left the barrel and sights alone. It's a Carl G with the read sight Badger posted the pic of.
I've fired a grand total of 3 rounds out of it. To say the pistol grip angle on the stock is uncomfortable is an understatement.
there is a thumb hole stock and a heavy barrel in it's future..

Took ,"david doyle's" ,advice bought a hundred rounds of ammo,Igman 139 gr, and taught myself to love my Swede's sights.

I was amazed!

Once I got the hang of them I shot better groups than with my scoped Tikka and it's sub M.O.A rifle with the right food.

The money I saved turned itself into a CZ 85 combat that I will take posession of as soon as the CFO deems me worthy.

Thanks again to all who responded.

Good to hear! :)

Yah the first time I shot my iron sighted M38 Swede with it's Iron sights I thought...this must be a mistake, I'm normally not this good. :D

I've shot better groups with my '96 at 100 yards with iron sights than I did with my Remington 243 and a scope.

I originally had 2 M38's, one I had totally redone 15 years ago by a very good gunsmith including new trigger assembly, slightly shortened barrel, new sporter stock, Williams sights and see through mounts and a 3X9 scope installed. Most people don't even realise it started as a milsurp. My iron sighted gun shot awesome but the scoped Swede absolutely blows my mind. I still have it and use it every deer season as my main gun. It is perfectly normal to drive every shot into a dime or smaller hole at 100 yards. Sometimes 5 shots will look like 2 or 3 hits when in fact some are going through the same holes. I can literally pick the hair I want to hit when deer hunting from a stand. It's the best shooting rifle I have ever owned. It was good enough that several of my friends scrounged them up and use them now too. GRIN Gotta love those ol milsurps! :) I guess what I am trying to say is if it's original, I'd leave it that way BUT if it's had any bubba work done, scope it! You will be VERY pleased!

Swede accuracy

Fired a few groups with my M96 1944 Husky (civilian target rifle) yesterday. 3-shot groups averaged 1 1/2 at 100yds. Best being an inch! Handloads of course, couldnt believe it. First time I've got to the range with it since getting it a couple years ago.

I have no plans to alter the rifle.
But I've seen a set up for mounting a scope I might try.
Looks similar to a Mojo set up in that it knocks out the pin holding the rear sight
and replaces the sight with a scope mount.
The rifle performs far and away better than my eyes do hence the scope idea.

It's a good feeling isn't it. :D

I might have to pull my extra swede (a sporter) out of consignment after reading this thread. :D
