Nan White Juno Beach and one of the most famous houses for Canada................................in France.

Nan Red (note the dark square in the center that is the gun emplacement for the 50mm AT gun that knocked out a few Fort Garry Horse Shermans). Back during the landing there would have been a USAAF P-47 that had belly landed on the beach off to the left.

Was just there last year. Got a tour from a historian that had basically spent his life collecting knowledge about the Canadians there, didnt know the brain could store so much information.
Details like "this road used to be a tank ditch", or some unassuming and unmarked house had once been turned into a field hospital.
Would love to get another day there with him.

Cool, my uncle landed on nan white. D day +1 is what he told me. My great uncle landed on D day, I don't remember him saying which zone. The only talked about one time.

My uncle was a mechanic and made it go France before being burnt in an accident. He was reported as being killed. When he showed up back home was a big surprise. Told me took him years before he wouldn't wake up from nightmares. I think his co driver was shot beside him and killed. He didn't talk much about the actual war. Told lots of stories about being in England before crossing to fight.

My great uncle was motorized artillery. Was wounded after a week in. Sten gun went off in a Bren carrier. He never touched a gun again. Didn't think highly of a Sten gun when he talked about it.

Wished I had asked more questions when they talked about that time. My uncle was more open to it than my great uncle.

Nan Red looking west, if you where standing on this spot 76 years back you would never imagine it being so scenic and peaceful ever again as now (pic taken last year)

Dog Green, Omaha Beach. The landing beach depicted in Saving Private Ryan . The heavily defended Vierville draw is off to my right in the pic. 76 years ago the scene of immense pain, suffering and courage.

Fellow Nutters, feel free to post pics, stories and family histories.

Sickened me to hear Prime Minstrel JT speak about -Day yesterday and how our soldiers "fought to preserve Canadian values".

Now he wants to disarm the descendants of those same people.

What a hypocrite ....

We visited Juno Beach in May, 2014, the week before the D-Day anniversary.
Half of Canada House looked really shabby because the owner of that half neglected it for a long time.
A year or two later, he got around to sprucing it up.
It's good to see it looking neat again.
