Black Bear King of the internet COVID edition

First year hunting bear by myself. I started baiting about 5 weeks ago in a spot about 200 yards from a big swamp, low to no hunting pressure where I know there should be a few bears. I have my stand set up 25 yards away - In the barrel I had scraps from throughout the year, dog food, and marshmellow/syrup/jello mix/sugar that I heating up and poured in. I dumped about 25L of used fryer grease on the ground....
Not one bear came in for a few weeks, and then June 1st at 7:00AM I had a decent bear on my trail camera. He/she was just getting into the barrel and at 7:10 on my video, it shows it running away, and at the end of the video, a wolf's head/shoulders pop up in the green bush looking where the bear ran....what luck!!

So now I'm wondering if the bear will even wanna come back, it had just discovered the barrel and in 10m a wolf chases it off and the wolf doesn't even come to the barrel where dog food had spilled on the ground. A week ago I mixed water/sugar/vanilla extract and sprayed all over and up in trees - I have since added popcorn and bread - Any more ideas guys? I have a few days left to hunt - because of work, maybe 3-4 days. If I don't use this tag, and get a bear this fall, can I still get a 2nd tag during the fall? Sorry for the long post. Thought you guys might get a good laugh, I did, it's funny but also not funny!!

The bear will be back. Wild animals compete for food all the time. If it is a lone wolf or just a couple wolves then the bear will certainly be back. If full wolf pack maybe not. The bear should come back though maybe at a different time. If a female with cubs she may not to avoid conflict or danger to her cubs but then you wouldn't be targeting her anyway so no loss. If one bear found the bait others likely will.

That bear knows there's free food there, it will be back. Bears get chased or scared off baits all the time. My baits always start slow, then one bear hits and all of a sudden I have three, six then a dozen. That one bear not only know there's a free meal there, but it will step in that fryer grease and spread that stuff around, then more bears will pick up that trail and follow, etc.

Alright thanks guys. Fryer grease was dumped a month ago, I should get more - it's been about 3 days, went an hour ago and barrel is still up. We'll see how it goes, goodluck to all of you too!

I was out by myself this morning and took this guy. Long story short, steep embankment, and very thick bush, in thistles and thorn, what a nightmare. Not big, not small, but still a lot for me by myself in that mess. It rained off an on, hard, soaked head to toe. Didn't realize the posting rues ahead of time, but just wanted to share. Taken with an RFB 18.5' , federal edge tlr 175gr @ ~30 meters, no measurements taken.

Thanks, I thought he was interesting. One more weekend left to the spring season in B.C. Good luck to those still hitting the bush!

not sure about other management units but bear season in Region 6 ends June 30 so still some more time yet at least up here. Nice bear you got there.

I'm mostly in region 2, sometimes 3. You're right, wasn't thinking of all the other MU's. I'm thinking of making a nice trip further north in the fall, to get away from it all.

Met one of the same bears again up close, kinda neat as we were a good ways from the last spot I ran into him.

You know the resolution and focus is good when you can count the freckles on the mosquitoes that are sucking blood from his ears.

A buddy invited me to hunt his bait tonight. This will be my first time hunting bears Besides sitting on the edge of grain fields with my dad as a kid. Buddy says there’s multiple bears coming in daily, I’m pretty excited so hopefully I can post a picture of success later lol

success is only part of the equation. getting close to them and seeing them is another part ...

My first successful solo hunt, first public land big game too.

Was up Harrison yesterday. It was rainy, but the real issue was the fog. My plan was to sit on one side of a small valley and glass the cuts on the other side, but you couldn't see 30 feet most of the time.

Found a big pile of fresh scat so I parked the truck and did some still hunting. Close to two hours later, maybe more, with visibility at pretty much its worst for the day I start hearing something moving through the brush across the road and up the cut a ways. I was maybe 10yds off the other side of the road, so I slowly creep to the road then across, and stop a few feet off the road behind a big stump to give me some cover in case the fog lifted suddenly. After a few minutes of staring through my binos into a wall of fog the fog thins just enough to see the bear. Quickly range it, 88m away, slowly working across and up as it feeds. Put my rifle across the top of the stump, found the bear through my scope, wait for it to stop moving for a sec and let it fly!

Bear went 10yds leaving a blood trail a blind man could follow. Not a big bear by any means, sure looked like a tank through the fog but ground shrinkage was real this time. Shot with my Savage Axis in 270win, 130gr accubond @3050fps. Double lung and a bit of the heart, only lost meat on the ribs.

How I found him:

And the obligatory with rifle pose:

Got really lucky with the weather, the heavy rain held out just long enough for me to quarter him up and get him in the cooler. And of course, the fog lifted like 20 minutes after I pulled the trigger. Those little black flies (noseeums maybe? I'm not sure) did a number on my arms though!
