Long Branch No4 Mk1* Good deal?

I have always wanted a Lee Enfield No4. A guy I know has one he has decided to sell. It is in excellent condition but I think he might be asking alot of money for it.

It is a Long Branch No4 Mk1* that has the date 1950 stamped on the receiver. It also appears to have a pretty elaborate rear sight (I'm not sure if this is the original type of sight for this rifle).

He is currently asking $500.00 for this rifle. Is this a good deal or is he trying to take me to the cleaners?

Attached are a couple of pics I took when I was over at his place.

Any help would be appreciated.

Parker Hale 5c with the eyepiece is worth 200.00 to 250.00 .....gone are the days when you buy these for less....just check eBay sales. One thing I'll point out to you is that the rifle has been accurized for target shooting. I say this because of the 2 dowells just ahead of the forestock tye plate. Stock looks good...if the bore looks like the rest of the rifle....write the man a cheque. If advertised on the board it would be sold in naoseconds. Good luck.
 
Good deal! I'll be spending much more and I hope to end up with as nice a rifle, I doubt it'll be any nicer. That's an "accurized" match rifle, let us know how it shoots.

Jebus! Good eye! Didn't even notice that.

Yeah, I paid $350 for my 1955 MkII in the grease and it didn't have a Diopter sight.

I'm no expert but I'd pay $500 for it.
 
Worth the money.

This has been a SERIOUS competition rifle and there never were that many of them running around. The dowels are for the internal bedding blocks, which often were rosewood, very carefully fitted. They used to have to do with hardwood, what we now do with fibreglass, and rosewood was selected for action bedding on many rifles.

Beautiful rifle! Makes mine look like junk.
 
Take a good close look at the rifle before you shoot it as it is similar to many that were converted to 7.62 for competition shooting. This wouldn't hurt the value, but it would be rather difficult chambering a .303 round!
