How would most of you feel about installing a red dot on a norinco SKS-D?

Is it sacrilege?

Could the tapped holes on the rear receiver be restored down the road somehow or simply replace the rear receiver altogether?

Thanks for your thoughts.

IMO the best way to go is one of those picatinny rails that replace the rear sight. Totally reversible, doesn't require permanent modifications to the receiver.

A red dot works as well mounted forward as it does anywhere and on the SKS the rear sight mount is the place where you can get solid attachment without permanent modification. If you don't mind drilling and tapping, a mount like the Addley Precision (made in Canada) with a low magnification scope is better for longer range of the cartridge and with a little practise you could become able to shoot with both eyes open just like with red dot.

Have a TRS25 mounted on mine at the rear sight location. Still can use stripper clips to load and system never changes 0.
Does require a cheek riser be installed on the stock and not much fun past 75 YD.
50YD steel ringing is possible and fun.

Is it an SKS d? I’m curious how rare the D are. Seems like there are a few here and there. The more I think about it the more it feels wrong to permanently modify part of an older gun like that, I don’t think I would be able to do it if I had one, I would probably just keep it all original in an effort to preserve value and mess around with a newer 22 instead. Not that the SKS-D are super collectible or anything, just feels wrong to modify something that can’t be reverted back. Those pics tinny receivers are interesting though I will check those out.

Also, any advice on choosing SKS d in general? Anyone with experience that could say it’s worth it? I read that mag insertion can be a bit awkward and that overall they don’t really compare well with genuine sks. I’m preparing to buy my first gun basically and am gravitating towards an SKS d when I get my pal, but I would be curious to hear some first hand feedback.

Thanks for the info!

Is fitment or reliability an issue with these? Thanks will check it out.

I haven't personally heard of any issues with these kind of mounts (aside from the typical "nyet, rifle is fine" talk), though due to the sheer amount of rifles produced under different manufacturers I wouldn't be surprised if minor fitting had to be done on some of them. The majority of Russian and Chinese SKS' should be fine though.

Ok sounds good. Thanks for follow up.
