I purchased a new pump action shotgun and was wondering if there is benefit to dry working the action
in an attempt to 'slicken' it before actual range/field use? Any suggestions as to method, or just skip the
whole exercise, shoot it and be wait for it to naturally smooth out and loosen up?

If the action is rough I’ll de burr and polish the bolt, action bars and the track it rides in inside the receiver with 600-800 wet dry and oil. 20-30min and it’s as smooth as butter. I’ve only had to do this with Chinese 870 clones, makes a world of difference quickly. I’d rather polish than sit there racking it over and over...

Just go shoot but don’t buy a case of shells before trying a box of various manufacturers/ loads to see if some cycle better. Mine prefers Remington to Challenger, both are the same price point but the Remington cycles much better!

^^^ This. My last couple mossberg 500s were especially bad. I use a little 4” smoothfile to round out the edges on the bars, the top cuts had a visible lip from the stamping machine.
