Winchester 1895 in 303

Is military surplus ammo too hot for a 1915 1895 Winchester? I have a bunch of Canadian Mk.VII ball ammo but I am leary of stressing the rifle. I have heard that the 1895 can handle 47,000 psi, but I don't know how powerful Mk.VII ball is. Any ideas?

Interested in hearing thoughts on this too, or just what ammo is ok to use in one... I've got a Win 1895 303 British as well. Made in 1910. I was planning on trying it out this fall, but I'll likely end up selling it instead in the next few weeks to make room for another. Sigh. Like to try it out first though.

It took a lot of agonizing to part with the one that Stepp has. I won several turkeys with it and also used it as a loner at the club turkey shoots where others won turkeys with it. It has a long 28" barrel and just hangs there when you are shooting plus I liked the trigger pull. I shot exclusively military surplus ammo through it and never had a moments regret.

Sounds good. I'll give her a whirl end of the week. Got some spare old 303 Br sitting around.

Stepp, I've come across two of them in the past year. One was in about 98% and the other was showing a fair amount of use (60%). They are around. Next time I see one, I'll pm you if I remember (but don't count on my memory).

That's what I'm talking about. The 405 has some crazy ballistics, and was always the one on my wish list as well. Good enough for Roosevelt, good enough for me. If your friend decides to part with the carbine, lemme know!!
I'd love to find a nice 405 rifle myself, and in Take-down would be even nicer!

New Win95

The Calgary location of Wholesale Sports has/had 6 or 7 Winchester 1895 SRC in 30-06 as of last weekend. If not for the 'tang safety and rebounding hammer mess' my wallet would be alot lighter now.............. 1600 dollars lighter.:eek:
